Helmet is an American rock band .
history
Helmet was founded in New York in the late 1980s by Page Hamilton (lead guitar, vocals), Peter Mengede (guitar), Henry Bogdan (bass) and John Stanier (drums).
After a constantly changing line-up and a longer break from 1997 to 2004, the band around mastermind Page Hamilton exists again today, but with an almost completely new line-up: After an interlude with Anthrax member Frank Bello on bass (tour member), the former will - and White Zombie drummer John Tempesta and Chris Traynor, the former Orange 9mm guitarist who also works for Gavin Rossdale's Band Institute , are currently the band members Dan Beeman on guitar, Dave Case on bass and Kyle Stevenson on drums. The only remaining founding member is Page Hamilton.
The album Size Matters , on which the typical helmet sound is expanded in particular with more melodic variants, disappointed many critics who accused Page Hamilton of copying his epigones .
On July 18, 2006, the album Monochrome was released . In it, Helmet partially return to their old sound. Mike Jost as drummer and Jeremy Chatelain on bass are new to the line-up.
After the release of the video for the title track Monochrome , Helmet headlined the Vans Warped Tour 2006. Shortly after the tour ended, band members Chris Traynor and Mike Jost left the band for personal and family reasons, and Jeremy Chatelain left the band. Page Hamilton was now alone, but a short time later went back to looking for new band members.
In the fall of the same year, Page Hamilton put together a completely new line-up, consisting of Jimmy Thompson (guitar), Jon Fuller (bass) and Kyle Stevenson (drums). In January 2007 there was a small tour along the US west coast as tour support for the band Guns N 'Roses .
In March 2007 the band went on tour in Australia, which was enthusiastically received by critics and fans. In April the video for the song Money Shot was released, which can also be viewed on the band's Myspace website.
In January 2009, Page Hamilton toured small clubs in Europe with a completely new Helmet line-up.
On September 17, 2010, the seventh Helmet studio album Seeing Eye Dog was released via the Work Song label. The special edition of the album includes a second CD with live recordings from the 2006 Warped Tour in San Francisco .
style
The band combined NY hardcore with Sonic Youth- like noise attacks and jazz- influenced harmony and rhythm .
Helmet was playing a style that was previously unknown outside of the hardcore scene. The simple, bone-dry guitar riffs were combined with a unique rhythmic precision and vocals that Page Hamilton described as belonging to the rhythm section . The E string, tuned down to D ( dropped D tuning ), made it possible to play power chords with one finger. This "chopping" on the fingerboard is one of the main features of the first albums.
Because of this uniqueness, Helmet's style became the inspiration for many musicians from the harder rock area. Especially music groups from the area of the later emerged Nu Metal often refer to Helmet and emphasize their role model function.
