Meantime is the second studio album by the metal and rock band Helmet and their major label debut. It was released on Interscope Records in June 1992 .

Music genre

Meantime combined elements of contemporary metal with those from noise rock and post-hardcore to an independent, partly machine-sounding mixture, which some music journalists and record companies regarded as "the next big thing". However, lacking most of the tracks, with staccato - riffing of Page Hamilton were equipped, accessibility, making it the videos Unsung and In the Meantime usually only managed to rock music television friendly. Nevertheless, the album is considered influential, for example for post-metal .

Emergence

After a kind of bidding competition had developed among the major labels and the bid went to Interscope, Meantime was recorded from December 1991 to February 1992 in New York City , with the band producing according to the booklet itself. Only In the Meantime was recorded with Steve Albini in Chicago , while the rest of the tracks were recorded with Wharton Tiers . The album was mixed by Andy Wallace . In 2012, the band performed the full-length album for the 20th anniversary.

reception

The album peaked at number 68 on the Billboard 200 . Michael Rensen wrote in Rock Hard magazine that with the album, Helmet would be “where they belong: right at the top. Their short, concise, mostly quite minimalist songs have achieved an enormous atmospheric density, sound only like Helmet and also have powerful hit qualities. "He awarded eight out of ten points. The readers of Visions magazine voted the album in 2005 at number 117 on their list of the best.
