Gavin McGregor Rossdale (born October 30, 1965 in London ) is a British musician , actor and frontman of the band Bush .

Life

Gavin Rossdale was born in Kilburn, London. His parents, Barbara Stephan and Douglas Rossdale (a doctor of Russian Jewish origin) divorced when he was eleven years old. He grew up with his father and an aunt after his mother remarried and moved to California . Rossdale has an older sister, Lorraine, and a younger sister, Soraya.

From Lorraines friend - from the band The Nobodyz - Rossdale first learned to play bass, but shortly afterwards changed the instrument and became a rhythm guitarist . After he left Westminster School at 17 , Rossdale began playing semi-professional football . Due to an injury he had to stop playing and founded the band Midnight (formerly Little Dukes). They released a few singles, but without any notable success. In 1991, Rossdale moved to Los Angeles for six months without an apartment or a job. So he lived where he could and worked where he was taken (including as a production assistant for music videos). Before returning to England, Rossdale spent some time in New York . Back in England he started to form a new band. He teamed up with his future manager Dave Dorrell, whom he had met in Los Angeles, and formed the band Future Primitive in 1992. After a few line-up changes, they renamed themselves to Bush and released the album Sixteen Stone in 1994 .

Gavin Rossdale married singer Gwen Stefani on September 14, 2002 . The couple has three sons: Kingston James McGregor (born May 26, 2006), Zuma Nesta Rock (born August 21, 2008) and Apollo Bowie Flynn (born February 28, 2014). In August 2015 Stefani filed for divorce "because of irreconcilable differences". From 2017 to 2018 Rossdale was in a relationship with the German model Sophia Thomalla .

In 2004 it was announced that Rossdale is the father of his godchild, Daisy Lowe . Daisy Lowe was born in 1989 after a relationship with Pearl Lowe.

Career

Bush

Rossdale is a singer, guitarist and composer for Bush . Their first album Sixteen Stone was a huge success and made the band stars almost overnight. Bush was not taken seriously at the time, however, as the British band, especially in the USA, was only seen as imitators of successful grunge bands such as B. Nirvana , Pixies or Pearl Jam . Some critics at the time even claimed that Rossdale was trying to imitate the voice of Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain . Nevertheless, the band became superstars in the USA (as opposed to Europe ). In Europe they only achieved their breakthrough with the singles Glycerine and Swallowed . Swallowed reached number 7 on the UK charts. A change of record label and internal disputes did the band no good, and so the band split up in 2002, which was never officially announced. In 2010 there was a reunion of Bush with a few gigs and a new album.

After Bush

2002 Rossdale took the song Adrenaline for xXx - Soundtrack on. The song was also the theme song for the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) major event Unforgiven in September 2002.

In the same year Rossdale recorded the song The Current with the Blue Man Group . This song is featured on the soundtrack of the movie Terminator 3 .

In 2004, two years after separating from Bush, Rossdale formed the band Institute . On September 13, 2005, their first album Distort Yourself was released , which contained the single Bullet-Proof Skin , which appears in the soundtrack of the film Stealth .

In 2008 Gavin Rossdale returned with his solo debut album WANDERlust (released June 3, 2008) and a new tour. The first single Love Remains the Same was part of the soundtrack for the film The Smile of the Stars (original title: Nights in Rodanthe ) with Diane Lane and Richard Gere .

In 2010 he recorded the track End of Me with the Finnish cello rock band Apocalyptica , which was released as the first single from the Apocalyptica album 7th Symphony . In the same year he played together with Carlos Santana the track Get It On , which originally comes from T. Rex , for Santana's album Guitar Heaven .

Trivia

  • Due to his origins as a graduate of Westminster School , the fact that Bush were seen as a mere imitator of the American grunge bands , as well as his appearance (" posterboy of grunge") Rossdale had to struggle with credibility problems from the beginning of his career. So next to his photo on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine in April 1996 it read: "Three million albums, five hit singles - Why won't anyone take Gavin Rossdale seriously?" (German: "Three million (sold) albums, five hit singles - why is Gavin Rossdale not taken seriously?").
  • Rossdale was featured in two American television series:
In Buffy the Vampire Slayer , the main character, a high school student, answered the question of where she would rather be right now than school in the eighth episode of the second season: "... a beach, but not one of those American beaches, one of those island beaches where the water's way too blue, and I'm laying on my towel, and it's just before sunset, and Gavin Rossdale's massaging my feet." (German for example: "on a beach, not in the USA, but on one of those island beaches where the water is unreal blue - I'm lying on a towel, the sun is about to set, and Gavin Rossdale is massaging my feet") .
The twelfth episode of the sixth season of the television series Gilmore Girls is originally titled Just Like Gwen and Gavin . The reason is the life situation of one of the protagonists, who compares this with that of Gwen Stefani, because at a later point in time in their relationship they both found out about a daughter of their partner, who in both cases only found out about her after years.
