action

The inconspicuous youngster Marc befriends Rebecca at his new school. At a party in their house, the two of them look for unlocked vehicles on the street in front of the house and steal cash and credit cards. When Marc mentions that one of his wealthy acquaintances is out of town, Rebecca suggests that they go into his house. Marc feels uncomfortable while Rebecca steals cash and a handbag with the comment that her idol Lindsay Lohan owns the same model. The two then flee in their friend's Porsche 911 convertible. With the cash they go on a shopping spree where they emulate the luxury lifestyle they know from the magazines.

Marc later visits a nightclub with Rebecca and her friends Nicki, Sam and Chloe, where Kirsten Dunst and Paris Hilton also dance. When Marc and Rebecca search Paris Hilton on the Internet, they find that Hilton will be out soon. You decide to steal from them. They find the front door key under their doormat and steal some jewelry. At a later party, Rebecca brags about a stolen bracelet in front of Nicki, Sam and Chloe. At Nicki's urging, Marc and Rebecca take the three girls to Paris Hilton's house. They steal shoes, bags, clothes, cash and jewelry. Later, Marc and Rebecca enter Hilton's house for the third time. They then want to visit Audrina Patridge's house and find out on the Internet when she will not be home. Using this method, the group goes on a thief tour in the homes of Megan Fox , Orlando Bloom and his girlfriend Miranda Kerr . They steal the usual items and some luxury watches that Marc sells to Chloe's friend Ricky.

Meanwhile, there is a news report with footage from surveillance cameras on the news that Marc worries, while Rebecca does not want to be deterred and plans a break-in into Rachel Bilson's house . Meanwhile, word of the thefts has spread among the group's friends, and the girls brag about their successes at parties and post photos of stolen property on social websites like Facebook. The group makes one final tour of Lindsay Lohan's house. The reports of the thefts in the Hollywood Hills are now increasing, and the group is being referred to as the "Bling Ring" in the media. The video footage and evidence on social media enables authorities to identify the group.

Marc, Nicki, Chloe and Ricky are placed under arrest, while Rebecca escapes arrest for the time being because she flew to her father. A short time later, however, she is arrested, while Sam's involvement remains undetected. To Rebecca's annoyance, Marc reveals the details of the break-ins. A Vanity Fair reporter interviews Nicki and Marc for their big story. While Marc is remorseful, Nicki vehemently accuses the others and is of the opinion that she has come across the wrong people. The group is sentenced to long prison terms and fines.

Months later, Nicki speaks about her time in prison on a talk show, mentioning that her cell was right next to Lindsay Lohan's (she was in prison for an alcohol offense). She addresses the audience directly and recommends them to visit her popular website, where she describes her life after the "Bling Ring".

Reviews

“Sofia Coppola [...] tells the story in an almost documentary manner, interwoven with fine irony. At first she gives an insight into the sometimes quite bizarre family life of her protagonists, but refrains from any psychologization. [...] Coppola [...] very precisely depicts the attitude to life of a generation for whom appearances count more than being. […] As superficial and moral as these young people are, Coppola does not condemn them, but rather arouses sympathy for them. [...] Their gentle mockery is rather aimed at the celebrities who are not afraid to make their lives public on the various internet platforms down to the smallest detail. Almost an invitation to attack. "

- Regina Urban : Nürnberger Nachrichten

“To condemn the girls as superficial or to ridicule their obsession with fashion and beauty would certainly not have been a difficult task - and fortunately, Coppola rarely resorts to satirical means. The problem with your film is once again not the atmosphere, but redundancy. The Bling Ring turns in its constant repetition of the forays of the girls at some point only in circles. "
