Harris Savides

Harris Savides (born September 28, 1957 in New York City , † October 9, 2012 ) was an American cameraman . His best-known works include Gus Van Sant's death trilogy ( Gerry , Elephant and Last Days ), The Game - The Gift of His Life and American Gangster .

Savides was born in New York in 1957 to parents of Greek origin. He graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York with a degree in photography and film .

Savides also became known for his special image design for the films The Yards and Birth , in which he only had the film material developed step by step in order to dissolve the colors and give the black tones a purple-brown tint, making the images look like paintings by Georges de la Tour and remember Caravaggio .

Savides was also the only cameraman to win three MTV Video Music Awards for Best Cinematography, two of them in a row, for Rain by Madonna and Everybody Hurts by REM

Savides last lived in Manhattan with his wife Medine and daughter Sophie. He died there of a brain tumor at the age of 55 .
