action

After studying for a few years, Florence got a job as a housekeeper for the Greenberg family and energetically and lovingly takes care of both the family and the dog Mahler. Her private life, on the other hand, is less sheltered, and so after a long relationship she is more likely to run from meaningless sex to even more meaningless sex.

Since the family is planning a vacation of several weeks in Vietnam , Philip Greenberg's brother, the carpenter and former musician Roger, is allowed to live in the house for so long and try to build a dog house for Mahler. He's just had a nervous breakdown and is moving back from New York to his old home in Los Angeles to relax . But none of this is really relaxing, as the neurotic Roger has something to complain about in everything. He is constantly nagging around, grumbling about the world and cannot resist many cynical and judgmental comments. He annoys his former friends from the band's past, Bella, Beth and Ivan, because they can't forgive him for turning down the only possibility of a record deal . Only Ivan spends time with him now and then.

Since the Greenbergs have asked Florence to take care of Roger, the two quickly come into contact. And Roger also tries to have sex with Florence quickly, which somehow succeeds, but also ends miserably. And although Roger can't do much with Florence, they still spend time together, which leads to her falling in love with him, which in turn repels Roger. Which also leads to Roger avoiding Florence. But the family dog Mahler falls ill with an autoimmune disease , and so both of them take care of both the dog and themselves. And so it happens that they have to have sex every now and then, which, however, fails miserably every time. However, he stands by her when she, unintentionally by someone else, is pregnant and wants to have an abortion.

When Florence then stays in the hospital, Roger returns home and discovers that his funky step-niece Sarah has also returned home with her friend and is planning a trip to Australia , which is why she first celebrates a party with friends of the same age. At this party, however, Roger feels lost and only loosens up after he has consumed Koks , Vicodin on whiskey and smoked a joint . For the first time in his life he becomes honest with himself and realizes his problems. In his mind he was still living in his youth, but now that he is celebrating with these twenty-year-olds, he realizes that he no longer belongs and how he has ruined his life. He then calls Florence and leaves her a message in which he pours out his feelings and how much he screwed up his life.

The next morning, Sarah and her friend Roger spontaneously propose to travel to Australia with us, which he accepts. On the drive to the airport, however , he experiences how badly the girls misbehave, so he escapes from the car, picks Florence up from the hospital and accompanies her home, where he asks her to check her mailbox so that they can hear his message can.

criticism

Susan Vahabzadeh ( Süddeutsche Zeitung ) found that Noah Baumbach had a good instinct for exploring characters in their behavior towards one another. However, everything is far too banal and too superficial, which is why a “kind of Woody Allen for the poor” comes out. While Allen's characters are just as neurotic , they are - in contrast to Baumbach's Greenberg - "but more charming, smarter, more interesting".

The lexicon of international films said: “Thanks to pointed dialogues, good actors and allusive staging ideas, many comedic vignettes are possible. Dramaturgically, however, the film, which reflects the inertia and disorientation of its protagonist, demands a lot of patience from the viewer and only manages to condense the story of a midlife crisis in a rousing way towards the end. "

The film opened in cinemas on March 19, 2010 and only grossed just over 6 million US dollars worldwide. It started in Germany on April 1, 2010 and has been available on DVD since October 14, 2010 .
