Murphy at the Route du Rock Festival 2007

LCD Soundsystem is the studio project of the music producer and multi-instrumentalist James Murphy , co-founder of the Electropunk label DFA Records . The music of the LCD sound system can be described as a mixture of dance and punk , but also includes elements from disco and other styles.

Murphy plays most of the instruments in the studio himself, but has been working with studio musicians Tyler Pope ( !!! / Out Hud ) on bass, Nancy Whang on keyboard, drummer Patrick Mahoney, guitarist Al Doyle and Gavin Russom on synthesizer since 2002 , who also form his permanent live band. Murphy is also accompanied by additional musicians at concerts.

LCD Soundsystem became known to a larger audience in 2002 with the single Losing My Edge . Pitchfork Media voted him 13th in the selection of the Top 500 Tracks of the 2000s in the summer of 2009. In 2005, the debut album LCD Soundsystem was released . The second album Sound of Silver , released in March 2007, was also received positively by the critics. It also found its way into the 1001 albums You Must Hear Before You Die .

In 2006, the LCD sound system for Nike released a 45-minute and 33-second long track called 45:33 , which was specially composed for joggers and whose dynamics should correspond to the physical sensation during a jogging run. This was published with some old B-sides in October 2006. This led to a legal dispute with the former Ash-Ra-Tempel guitarist Manuel Göttsching . For the artwork of 45:33, Murphy had largely copied the cover of Göttsching's most important work E2-E4 without having obtained the necessary usage rights.

In 2008 the song Get Innocuous from the Sound of Silver album was used as background music for the television commercial for the video game Grand Theft Auto IV .

In 2010 James Murphy was responsible for the background music for the film Greenberg by Noah Baumbach .

The track I Can Change was also used for the console game FIFA 11 .

For the 2010 work This Is Happening , Murphy announced that it would be the last album and that he would like to devote more time to his label DFA and his private life. The last concert of LCD Soundsystem in Madison Square Garden was recorded with the concert documentary Shut Up and Play the Hits and published in 2012. The live album The Long Goodbye followed in 2014.

At the end of December 2015, Murphy reactivated LCD sound system and released the song Christmas Will Break Your Heart . In 2016, LCD Soundsystem performed at several festivals. The fourth studio album American Dream was released on September 1, 2017. At the Grammy Awards 2018 , LCD Soundsystem won a Grammy in the category Best Dance Recording for their song Tonite .
