Indietronic

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term Indietronic (alternatively: Indietronics or Indietronica ) describes the mixture of indie pop and rock with stylistic devices of electronic music that has developed since the mid- 1990s . This describes both traditional musicians who are increasingly incorporating electronic components into their pieces and musicians from the electronic camp who are discovering the song format for themselves. The music can basically be described as a mixture of pop , electronica and indie rock , can have elements from hip-hop , folk , jazz , post-rock and krautrock and usually tends to be more gentle, melancholic.

History and representatives

For the first time the term appeared in the late 1990s and was for a time in parallel with alternative terms such as Data Pop (after their 2001 compilation of Spex ), Indie Dance , Indie Electro or lap-pop used which are now no longer in use. With the increasing availability of professionally usable electronic instruments , artists from the indie sector also approached the stylistic devices of electronic music and, above all, took up references from the IDM . The first popular album of this direction is Shrink by The Notwist , which was released in 1998. In 2002 the compilation Indietronica Vol. 1 and the album Neon Golden by The Notwist were released. In 2003, Give Up by The Postal Service developed into the Sub Pop label's biggest commercial success since Nirvana's debut album Bleach . In 2006 several albums (such as Hot Chip with The Warning or So This Is Goodbye by Junior Boys ) were particularly successful with critics.

Other important albums of this variety are Yesterday Was Dramatic, Today Is Okay by Múm (1999), Binocular (2000) Zoomer (2002) by Schneider TM , A Pack of Lies by Turner and Nothing's Lost by Styrofoam (2004). Some other artists of this style are for example Dntel , Duo505 , The Knife , Stereolab , Lali Puna , Ms. John Soda , Console , Her Space Holiday , Electric President , finn. , Werle & Stankowski , Tarwater and Ulrich Schnauss . Labels with an emphasis on music in this direction are e.g. B. Too Pure and Warp Records from the English-speaking and Alien Transistor , City Center Offices , Hausmusik , Ladomat2000 , Morr Music , Payola and Schinderwies Productions from the German-speaking area.
