Manuel Göttsching

Manuel Göttsching (born September 9, 1952 in Berlin ) is a multi- instrumentalist ( guitar main instrument ) and composer . He is considered one of the pioneers of electronic music and the scene known as the Berlin School . The English daily newspaper The Guardian gave him the nickname The Göttfather .

Career

The 1960s

From 1960 to 1966 Göttsching learned to play classical guitar. He founded the first school band at the age of 15 with his friend and schoolmate Hartmut Enke at his birthday party. In 1968 and 1969 he met the Swiss avant-garde composer Thomas Kessler for the first time in the electronic beat studio on Pfalzburger Strasse in Berlin.

The 1970s

In 1970 Göttsching had a short-term project called Steeple Chase Blues Band with Hartmut Enke, Wolfgang Müller and Volker Zibell . In the same year he founded the band Ash Ra Tempel with Enke and Klaus Schulze . The debut album of the same name was recorded in Hamburg with the help of Conny Plank and released in 1971. In the same year Schulze left the band again. The second album Vibrations was created in 1972 by Manuel Göttsching, Hartmut Enke and various guests as well as the album Seven Up , which was released in Switzerland with Dr. Timothy Leary and other guests emerged. Join Inn , the third album from 1972, was created during the sessions for Walter Wegmüller's album Tarot . The line-up for Join Inn again consisted of Manuel Göttsching, Hartmut Enke, Klaus Schulze and Rosi Müller.

In 1973, a concert took place at the Parisian Theater de l'Quest that marked the band's international breakthrough. However, Hartmut Enke ended his membership at Ash Ra Tempel and Manuel Göttsching was on his own. In the same year the fifth Ash-Ra-Tempel album Starring Rosi was released , which Manuel Göttsching recorded with guests Harald Grosskopf on drums, Dieter Dierks on bass and Rosi Müller.

In the following year Göttsching founded his own studio "Roma" and recorded his first solo album Inventions for Electric Guitar there, which was released in the same year. Together with Lutz Ulbrich , he toured England and France in 1975 . Recordings of these concerts were used a year later by the French filmmaker Philippe Garrel in his film Berceau de cristal . The soundtrack of the same name was released on CD in 1993 .

In 1976, the seventh Ash-Ra-Tempel album came about with the solo album New Age of Earth . It was first released in France and accompanied by Göttsching's first solo tour. The British label Virgin Records released the album New Age of Earth on the international market in 1977 , but shortened the name to Ashra . As a result of the publication, a live concert by Ashra with Manuel Göttsching and Lutz Ulbrich on guitars and keyboard instruments and Harald Großkopf on drums took place in Regent's Park in London . The Ashra Trio toured Switzerland , France and Belgium for twenty concerts . In 1978 Göttsching's third solo album Blackouts was released worldwide under the name "Ashra". Göttsching played the music live for Claudia Skoda's fashion show "Laufsteg" in the Berlin Egyptian Museum . In addition to the Ashra album Correlations , recorded in the Panne-Paulsen Studios in Frankfurt am Main, among others , Göttsching's music for the “Big Birds” fashion show by Claudia Skoda was created in 1979 in the Berlin Congress Hall .

The 1980s

The tenth album Belle Alliance , released in 1980, was the second of the albums recorded by the Ashra trio. “Die Dominas”, a project by Rosi Müller and Claudia Skoda, was produced by Manuel Göttsching in the same year. Ashra appeared in 1981 on the Spanish television program "Musical Express". On December 12, 1981 Göttsching recorded the album E2-E4 , which was only released under his name in 1984.

Drum Fire , Göttsching's composition for percussion and orchestra , was performed for Claudia Skoda's fashion show of the same name in 1982 at the Berlin Art Museum. In 1983, Göttsching's composition Fights-Veits was performed at another fashion show . In 1985 Ashra played live at UK Electronica . For Joop! A year later, Göttschings Musik Ost-West was created for the international fashion fair in Düsseldorf . The music collage for Antonio Skármeta's play Brennende Patience was also created in 1986 .

In 1988 Ashra gave two concerts as the Duo Göttsching / Ulbrich as part of the “Wüstenklänge” program in Berlin. The recordings were published in an edited form on the album Walkin 'the Desert in 1989. The chart hit Sueño Latino , which consists mainly of parts of the 1984 album E2-E4 , was released in 1989 by the Italian label DFC.

The 1990s

In addition to a concert that took place in front of Cologne Cathedral , the 1977 solo album Dream & Desire (recorded for Olaf Leitner's radio program on RIAS Berlin ) and the album Tropical Heat from 1985 to 1987 were released.

In 1993 the fifteenth soundtrack album Le Berceau de Cristal was released, which had already been recorded in 1975 by Manuel Göttsching and Lutz Ulbrich. Early Water , a recording by Manuel Göttsching and Michael Hoenig from 1976, was released in 1995. The six-CD set The Private Tapes with historical and unpublished recordings by Manuel Göttsching, Ashra and Ash Ra Tempel was released in 1996. In 1997 a successful tour through Japan with a quartet with the new member Steve Baltes (keyboard instruments, samples) (documented on CD @shra ) and a concert at the Herzberg Open Air Festival . Another concert took place in Nijmegen ( Netherlands ) as part of the KLEM Festival , which was released on CD in 1998 under the name Sauce Hollandaise .

In the Oscar -nominated film Kurt Gerron carousel his wife looked Manuel Göttsching as an actor with and accompanied Ben Becker on piano .

The 2000s

In April 2000 there was an Ash-Ra-Tempel-Reunion-Concert in London with Manuel Göttsching and Klaus Schulze. In the same year, the recordings of the concert as Gin Rosé and a studio album of the two under the title Friendship were released. In July 2000 Ashra performed in Berlin at the Academy of Arts . In 2001 Göttsching recorded the title Intimate with the Italian DJ Santos in Bologna . On the occasion of the release of Lutz Ludwig Kramer's first solo album Being content (ex- Agitation Free ), Göttsching supported Kramer at a concert in Griesheim , Hesse. MG.ART, Manuel Göttsching's own label, has existed since 2002.

In 2003 Manuel Göttsching composed the music to accompany FW Murnau ’s silent film “ Schloss Vogelöd ” (1921) as a commission for the Braunschweig Film Festival . The premiere took place on October 30, 2003 in the Braunschweig State Theater , there was another screening in 2006 in the Wrocław Opera and in 2007 at the Music & Film Festival in Jecheon , South Korea.

On March 25, 2005 Manuel Göttsching played with the Ensemble Zeitkratzer in the Berliner Volksbühne "E2-E4" in a version for orchestra and guitar.

Göttsching's solo premiere in Japan took place on April 29, 2006 at the Anoyo Festival at the foot of Mount Fuji . The Polish video artist Kinga supported him on stage with a live video mix. The second concert in Japan in 2006 was the live premiere of "E2-E4" at the Metamorphose Festival in August. For the 25th anniversary of "E2-E4" on December 12, 2006, the European premiere of the title took place in the Berlin Club Berghain .

In 2008 Göttsching gave concerts in the USA for the first time. The USA premiere of "E2-E4" took place during the "Wordless Music" series at the Lincoln Center in New York. There were other concerts in the historic St. Mary's Church in Philadelphia and in the "Club Love" in New York. Manuel Göttsching played with his band Ashra in August 2008 at the Metamorphose Festival in Japan. In November 2008, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Goethe Institute in Beijing, the live premiere of the composition "E2-E4" took place in Beijing.

In 2009 the film “The Junker and the Communist” by Ilona Ziok had its cinema premiere . Manuel Göttsching composed the film music and produced the film. In the same year he performed in Los Angeles .

Together with Steve Hillage , Elliott Sharp and Zhang Shouwang , Manuel Göttsching performed his composition Inventions for Electric Guitar at the Metamorphose Festival in 2010 .

In 2012 he performed with Harald Grosskopf in Ashra - Correlations in Concert , where he played songs from his solo albums.

For the 30th anniversary of the Abteiberg Museum in Mönchengladbach , Göttsching played E2-E4 live on June 23, 2012. This was only the second live performance of the piece in Germany.

On August 11th and 12th, 2012 he performed at a benefit concert in Japan, where he also played E2-E4 live. In September of the same year he visited the Copernicus Science Center in Warsaw , the Dekmantel Festival in the Netherlands and most recently the Côte d'Azur again .

In 2013 he played some of his songs, including classics like Sunrain and Deep Distance from the album New Age of Earth , at the Ambient Festival in Gorlice . He also gave his own concert at the OVAL Space in London .

On the 150th anniversary of the city of Katowice , he performed at the associated festival in 2015. He also played in Hebden Bridge in the UK and together with his band Ash Ra Tempel at the E-live Festival in Oirschot . In the same year Christian Wheeldon published a biography about Göttsching - Deep Distance - The Musical Life of Manuel Göttsching. In it, well-known personalities and artists of Krautrock such as Göttsching's Ash Ra Tempel colleague Harald Grosskopf and Lutz Ulbrich "Lüül" have their say.

On April 27, 2017 he performed together with the Danish band CIRKLEN Inventions for Electric Guitar live in the Philharmonie Stettin .

As part of the festival die digital dusseldorf he played E2-E4 on November 16, 2017 in the Tonhalle Düsseldorf .
