The Mieczysław Karłowicz Philharmonic in Stettin ( Polish Filharmonia im. Mieczysława Karłowicza w Szczecinie ) was founded in 1948. The first concert took place on October 25, 1948 under the direction of Felicjan Lasota.

history

The artistic directors were later taken over by Marian Obst and Marian Lewandowski, and in 1953 Janusz Cegiełła was appointed director. The Philharmonic has been named after the Polish composer Mieczysław Karłowicz since 1958 .

Under the direction of Józef Wiłkomirski (1957–1977), the number of musicians was increased. During this period, the Philharmonie also gave guest appearances in Germany. Under Stefan Marczyk (1977–1993) the Philharmonie performed often in Germany and also visited Denmark, Bulgaria, Italy and the Soviet Union.

The orchestra played with well-known soloists and conductors such as Krystian Zimerman , Piotr Paleczny , Adam Makowicz , Witold Małcużyński , Wiesław Ochman , Natalia Gutman and Jerzy Maksymiuk .

The Szczecin Philharmonic takes part in the Usedom Music Festival and performs in Berlin , Greifswald , Schwedt and Frankfurt an der Oder .

Concert hall

The Philharmonie performed in the hall of the Szczecin Town Hall until 2014. The new building was built on the site of the ruins of the concert hall built by Franz Schwechten in 1884, which was demolished in 1962 .

In April 2011 construction began on the new five-story building with two concert halls with 953 and 192 seats. There is space for 120 musicians and 110 singers on the stage. The new building was inaugurated on September 14, 2014. On May 8, 2015, the building designed by the Spanish-Italian architects Alberto Veiga and Fabrizio Barozzi was awarded the Mies van der Rohe Prize as the best structure of 2014 .
