Wiesław Ochman (born February 6, 1937 in Warsaw ) is a Polish opera singer ( tenor ).

Life

Singing lessons were initially a leisure activity for Ochman, which he pursued during his engineering studies; but he was trained professionally by Gustaw Serafin and Sergiusz Nadgryzowski . He then embarked on an operatic career. His debut in Bytom in 1960 as Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti was followed there for three more years until he was engaged at the opera house in his hometown Warsaw in 1964. His international career began in the late 1960s, which took him to the Berlin State Opera , Covent Garden Opera London, the Grand Opéra Paris and Prague. He has made several guest appearances at the Hamburg State Opera . He also sang at the Glyndebourne and Salzburg festivals, adding Mozart roles to his repertoire. In a television adaptation of Franz Lehár's The Tsarevich , he appeared on the side of Teresa Stratas .

He received further engagements at the Vienna State Opera , at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, in Geneva, Chicago, San Francisco and finally at the Metropolitan Opera New York, of which he became a permanent member of the ensemble in 1975. Here he was mainly used in the Slavic subject. Guest appearances took him back to Hamburg and the Deutsche Oper Berlin until the 1990s .
