Philippe Garrel (born April 6, 1948 in Boulogne-Billancourt ) is a French actor , screenwriter and film director .

life and work

Garrel was born in Paris in 1948 as the son of actor Maurice Garrel . In 1964 he made his first film Lés enfants désaccordés , for which he also wrote the screenplay. He achieved fame in 1968 with Marie pour mémoire , a film about a pregnant young woman. In 1969 he met the German singer Nico , who sang the song The Falconer in his film Le lit de la vierge . With Nico, who appeared in his 1972 film La cicatrice intérieure , he lived together until 1979. Since the experimental work of the 1970s, his work has increasingly developed in the direction of narrative fiction. While he wrote the script for his earlier films mostly alone, he has been working with the writer Marc Cholodenko since Les baisers du secours (1989) .

The three most important themes of his films are love, drugs and filmmaking itself. In long, very precisely chosen shots, he observes the interaction of his characters with their environment. J'entends plus la guitare, for example, tells of a love under the conditions of drug addiction, La naissance de l'amour of the breakup and rebuilding of relationships between two men, an author and an actor, and Sauvage innocence of a young director who is his first Film that is supposed to denounce drug addiction has to finance itself with drug money. Garrel works with numerous well-known actors in French cinema, in front of and behind the camera. These include the actors Lou Castel , Catherine Deneuve and Jean-Pierre Léaud , as well as the long-time cameraman Godards , Raoul Coutard .

Garrel is a teacher at the College of Film and Audiovision in Paris ( La fémis ). In the 1980s he was married to actress Brigitte Sy , with whom he had children Louis and Esther Garrel . Son and daughter are also actors. The family members often had roles in Garrel's films, Louis most recently in Un été brûlant , which was invited to compete at the 68th Venice International Film Festival in 2011 .

In 2020 Garrel received an invitation to compete at the 70th Berlin International Film Festival for the feature film Le sel des larmes .
