Brigitte Sy (2015)

Brigitte Sy (born January 26, 1956 in Paris ) is a French actress, director and screenwriter. Her first film as a director, Les Mains libres, was shown at the 2011 Berlinale . She often starred in the films of her ex-partner Philippe Garrel and is the mother of Louis and Esther Garrel .

Live and act

Sy was interested in the theater from a young age. She graduated in acting in France and deepened her studies in Montreal and New York . Back in France, she made her film debut in The Dropout by Daniel Duval in 1979 . At the same time she took part in plays. From the mid-1980s she was often seen in Philippe Garrel's films, some of which she was also involved in as "Script Girl" and co-screenwriter. She has two children with Garrel who are both actors. Sy starred in many other films and later taught as an acting teacher.

Sy only switched to the other side of the camera late: Her first film as a director was made in 2008. She filmed her own experiences in the short film L'Endroit idéal : Sy had given workshops in prisons for ten years and had a relationship with one of the inmates involved during a film project began. These experiences were later incorporated into the feature- length film Les mains libres .

Sy became infected with the HIV virus from the prisoner with whom she was in love . Her illness was the theme of Sy in 2009 in the short film Seafood , which was broadcast by Arte on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Act Up Paris initiative . The main characters from L'Endroit idéal and Les mains libres , who are strongly autobiographical, are also HIV-positive.

In 2018, Sy was one of the 100 signatories of an open letter in Le Monde that dealt critically with the #Metoo movement . Together with fellow campaigners such as Brigitte Bardot , Catherine Deneuve and Catherine Millet , she campaigned “for the freedom to be intrusive” and against a “totalitarian climate” regarding sexuality.
