action

The film begins in a divorce mediation . Charlie is a successful off-Broadway theater director with his own theater company; his wife Nicole plays the lead role in his current production of Elektra . They have a son, eight-year-old Henry. Although the joint play is supposed to move to Broadway, Nicole and Henry are drawn back to their hometown of Los Angeles, where she wants to work on a pilot film . Charlie hopes the separation is only temporary, but Nicole wants to finally pursue her own career path, live near her mother Sandra and sister Cassie again, and divorce Charlie. Nicole cannot engage in mediation: she refuses to read aloud the list of things that she values about her husband, which was drawn up at the request of the mediator.

Although she and Charlie had agreed to work cooperatively and without attorneys, Nicole consulted high-profile divorce attorney Nora Fanshaw upon arriving in LA. She tells her how she felt "smaller" and "smaller" in her marriage because she suppressed her needs and subordinated herself to Charlie. She realized this while watching a George Harrison documentary - she felt like George's wife , whose name hardly anyone knows. Charlie also did a lot of family work, but was ultimately an egomaniac and deaf to her needs, especially to her desire to swap New York for Los Angeles, at least for a while. She also suspected that Charlie had cheated on her with the stage manager of the theater.

When Charlie breaks off from work on a new production and flies to LA for Halloween , Nicole, with the help of her sister, hands him the divorce papers. The first interview with the successful lawyer Jay Marotta, who predicts a dirty and, above all, extremely expensive battle, is disillusioning. There is also an alienation in relation to Henry, and their Halloween excursion together is disappointing. Henry also makes it clear that he does not want to return to New York.

Charlie suppresses the divorce and throws himself into work in New York with his company, which receives an enormous boost from winning the MacArthur Fellowship . When Nora warned that he had to find a lawyer, he opted for the grandfather's but somewhat lax family lawyer Bert Spitz, who promised him to keep the proceedings as humane as possible. Because he expects better chances of getting custody , Charlie looks for an apartment in LA, but does not want to give up the plan of a future together in New York. At an evening handover from Henry there seems to be a tentative rapprochement: Nicole cuts Charlie's hair as usual; Three of them, child and parents struggle to close the defective garden gate.

Although Bert advises an out-of-court settlement and an extensive waiver of custody, and almost everything has already been negotiated, Charlie decides to invest the first tranche of his MacArthur prize money in the star lawyer Marotta and to take him to the family court . There the two teams of lawyers try to drag the other side into the mud with the help of the most intimate details. Meanwhile, Henry's school performance is deteriorating: he reads poorly. Nicole visits Charlie in his new apartment in order to find solutions in peace. The attempt at conversation ends in screaming and outbursts of anger. Charlie knocks a hole in the wall of the room, wishes Nicole dead and collapses in front of her, whimpering, whereupon she comforts him. They apologize to each other in a whisper.

Nora briefs Nicole on the custody reviewer's inspection visit and incites her to fight by calling Charlie a typical representative of the patriarchy. Meanwhile, Charlie pretties up the new apartment for the appraiser's visit. His attempt to present himself as the perfect father goes grotesquely wrong. Bleeding on his arm and half passed out, he then lies on the kitchen floor.

Some time later, the divorce was negotiated. Charlie has dropped the request for a New York home for the family. Out of ambition, Nora had his visiting hours curtailed again, even though Nicole didn't want that. At a family party, Nicole sings the song "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" (with her mother and sister). Then you see Charlie singing the song "Being Alive" in front of his colleagues in a New York bar (both songs come from the same musical: "Company" by Stephen Sondheim , which is about a - failing - partnership).

On next Halloween, Charlie meets a completely satisfied Nicole in LA: She was able to direct your TV series herself and is nominated for an Emmy , she also has a boyfriend. Charlie announces that he will teach at UCLA for a year and direct at CalArts , so he will be in town permanently. While everyone is changing for the celebration, he watches Henry read the handwritten list that Nicole wrote about Charlie in the failed marriage therapy, loudly and relatively fluently. Henry asks Charlie to read aloud what he is doing in tears, watched by Nicole in the background. At the Halloween party, the family goes in Beatles costumes (Nicole as John Lennon , Henry as George Harrison ), Charlie has thrown a sheet and depicts a ghost. In the evening, Nicole allows Charlie to take Henry with him, even though the supervisory authority is not on him .

production

Adam Driver , here shortly after filming in Cannes ended, took on the role of Charlie in the film

Directed by Noah Baumbach , who also wrote the script.

Scarlett Johansson plays Nicole. The role of Charlie was cast with Adam Driver , with whom the director had already worked on his previous films The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) , Feels in his mid-twenties and Frances Ha . Merritt Wever plays Nicole's sister Cassie, Julie Hagerty her mother Sandra and Azhy Robertson her son Henry.

Robbie Ryan acted as cameraman , who shot the film on 35 mm and worked with many close-ups. In combination with the wide-angle shots of the actors' faces, the physical distance between Charlie and Nicole becomes clear, according to Jon Frosch of The Hollywood Reporter .

The soundtrack was composed by Oscar, Grammy and Emmy winner Randy Newman , with whom Baumbach had already worked on The Meyerowitz Stories . Before the album Marriage Story - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack was released on November 6, 2019, Lakeshore Records released the songs What I Love About Charlie and What I Love About Nicole as download singles in advance.

From August 29, 2019, the film was shown in the main competition at the Venice Film Festival , where it competed for the Golden Lion and, alongside The Laundromat and The King, was one of the three films presented by Netflix there. Also in September 2019, the film was shown as a centerpiece at the Toronto International Film Festival and at the end of September and beginning of October 2019 at the New York Film Festival . At the same time it celebrated its premiere in German-speaking countries at the Zurich Film Festival . Before its launch on Netflix on December 6, 2019, the film was shown in selected cinemas from November 6, 2019 in the USA and from November 21, 2019 in Germany.

reception

Reviews

The film has so far convinced 94 percent of all Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 8.8 out of a possible 10 points. The film also came third in the 21st Annual Golden Tomato Awards in the Best Dramas category .

Jon Frosch of The Hollywood Reporter writes that the film is not a melancholy postmortem of a failed romance à la The City Neurotics , but a chronicle of conflicts and how a relationship changes in the course of divorce proceedings. As in Ingmar Bergman's Scenes of a Marriage , a film whose influence on Noah Baumbach's work Frosch clearly recognizes, such a work is hard work and feels amazingly truthful, which could possibly be due to Baumbach's own divorce from actress Jennifer Jason Leigh . But the film is also funny and, when you least expect it and need it most as a viewer, it is almost unbearably tender, which is largely thanks to the sensational leading actors who surpass each other. As other divorce films like Kramer versus Kramer , You or both and also Der Rosenkrieg would have shown that a breakup often contradicts what the heart wants and it requires an almost cruel amount of discipline, Marriage Story shows this with even more strength and clarity . Charlie is not a boastful narcissist like the patriarchs who played Jeff Daniels and Dustin Hoffman in Baumbach's The Squid and the Whale or The Meyerowitz Stories , according to Frosch. He is sociable and loving, but he has put the woman he loves in the shade. Even if it didn't seem like that at first, the audience's sympathies for the two would likely change over the course of the film, and one could love both of them that way.

Rolling Stone's David Fear writes that with this disintegrating relationship, one feels that their breakup has taken a long time, during which time resentment, irritation and dissatisfaction have gradually accumulated. The quick steps from their original love to an outright contempt for one another are shocking. Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson gave every hurt look from these two partners, every frustrated argument and every allegation an uncomfortable intimacy. There is no wrong cast among the supporting actors, according to Fear, from Julie Hagerty as a narcissistic mother to Alan Alda as a lawyer. In Marriage Story there are incredible emotional ups and downs, such pathetic and angry, but also tragicomic moments and blissful, outstanding scenes that you feel overwhelmed by the humanity of it all.
