Venice International Film Festival 2019

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 76th  Venice International Film Festival ( 76th Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica in Italian ) was held at the Lido from August 28 to September 7, 2019 . Alongside the Berlinale and the Cannes International Film Festival, they are among the three most important A festivals in the world and were under the direction of Alberto Barbera for the eighth time.

The opening film was the French film La Vérité - Live and Let Lie by Hirokazu Koreeda with Catherine Deneuve , Juliette Binoche and Ethan Hawke . For the first time since 2012 , no American film (including co-productions) was selected for the opening evening. The Burnt Orange Heresy by Giuseppe Capotondi was shown as the graduation film .

The jury president of the international competition, in which the Golden Lion is awarded for the best film at the festival, was the Argentine director and screenwriter Lucrecia Martel . The Italian actress Alessandra Mastronardi was chosen to host the opening ceremony and the final award gala .

The British actress Julie Andrews and the Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar were awarded the Golden Lion as an honorary award for a lifetime achievement.

On August 27, 2019, the evening before the opening, the film Ekstase (1933) by the Czech director Gustav Machatý with Hedy Lamarr was shown as part of the pre-opening event . The film was restored by the Prague film archive Narodni Filmovy archiv with a contribution from the Austrian film archive . The aim of the restoration was to produce a true-to-original version of the film in the Czech language, like the one shown at the 1934 film festival.
