Ciro Alfonso Guerra (born February 6, 1981 in Río de Oro , Departamento del Cesar ) is a Colombian film director .

Life

Guerra studied cinema and television at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia . He initially worked as a short film director and published the documentary Jairo Pinilla in 1999 , cineasta colombiano and in 2001 the short animation film Intento . His first feature film was La sombra del caminante , released in 2004 , which Guerra began at the age of 20 and which was shown at the Festival Internacional de Cine de San Sebastián and the Tribeca Film Festival , among others . The film was Colombia's entry for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2005 , but received no nomination for the award. Guerra's second feature film The Travels of the Wind , which tells the story of a widowed accordionist and his friendship with a boy in the style of a road movie , has also been shown at numerous international festivals and was awarded the prize of the City of Rome at the 2009 Cannes International Film Festival . At the Festival Internacional de Cine de Cartagena de Indias, the film won awards for the best Colombian film, the best film and the best director. Guerra had worked on the film for four years; this film was also submitted as Colombia's entry for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film .

In 2015, Guerra's third feature film The Shaman and the Snake was released . The black-and-white film, which is set in the Amazon, is about the shaman Karamakate, who accompanied the German scientist Theodor Koch-Grünberg in 1909 and the American Richard Evans Schultes in 1940 , both of whom are in search of a sacred wonder plant. The film premiered in 2015 at the Cannes Film Festival as part of the Quinzaine des réalisateurs section and was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Foreign Language Film in 2016. It is the first time that a Colombian film has been nominated in this category.

In 2019 he was selected as the jury president of the Semaine de la critique section at the 72nd edition of the Cannes Film Festival .
