Waiting for the Barbarians is a film drama by Ciro Guerra , which celebrated its world premiere on September 6, 2019 as part of the Venice Film Festival . The film is based on the novel Waiting for the Barbarians by JM Coetzee .

Colonel Joll is known for his brutal military methods. The magistrate is of a lower rank. He serves on a distant outpost until his loyalty to the Empire is tested. A tribe of nomads is said to be preparing an attack and Joll has come to town.

Literary template

The film is based on the novel Waiting for the Barbarians (original title Waiting for the Barbarians ) by JM Coetzee from 1980. This is largely set in a border town of an empire that is not precisely defined in terms of time and location, the highest representative of which is the magistrate. As a first-person narrator, he describes his experiences after the arrival of Colonel Joll in the city, whose department acts with extreme brutality against all supposed internal and external enemies of the empire. The magistrate gets into an internal conflict when Joll has some captured barbarians tortured.

The shooting took place in December 2018 in Marrakech, Ouarzazate and Essaouira in Morocco and in Rome.
