London Film Festival
The London Film Festival (in the long form also: The Times bfi London Film Festival ) is an international film festival in London . It is considered the largest film festival in the UK .
history
The festival was founded in 1956 by a group of film critics, including journalist Dilys Powell of the weekly newspaper The Sunday Times . Today it is organized by the British Film Institute (bfi). Since 1966, the respective owner of The Sunday Times has also owned the daily newspaper The Times , which is the main sponsor and one of the namesake of the festival.
The festival's program will primarily include films that have not previously been shown in theaters in the UK. Traditionally, films from the twelve A-festivals such as Cannes or Venice are replayed.
The Times bfi London Film Festival has several venues in and around central London. These include cinemas in Leicester Square , the center of London's cinematography, and the BFI Southbank, the birthplace of the film festival.
The London Film Festival is accredited as a festival without international competition by the international film producers association FIAPF . Therefore, the festival's film prizes are only awarded in special categories. One of the main prizes at the London Film Festival is the Sutherland Trophy , which goes to the first feature film by a director. The Sutherland Trophy has been awarded by the British Film Institute since 1958, but only since 1997 as part of the London Film Festival. A main prize for the best film has also been awarded since 2009. The festival's other awards include The Times BFI London Film Festival Grierson Award for best feature-length documentary and a FIPRESCI award from the Fédération Internationale de la Presse Cinématographique .
Since 2016, the BFI has been presenting the IWC Filmmaker Bursary Award in cooperation with the International Watch Company . The award is endowed with £ 50,000 and is intended to support early career directors and screenwriters.
