John Trengove (born March 21, 1978 in Johannesburg ) is a South African film director , film producer and screenwriter .

Life

John Trengove was born in 1978 during apartheid in Johannesburg and grew up there in a family that taught him to question the supremacy and authority of whites. His father is the well-known South African lawyer Wim Trengove.

After studying at the Tisch School of the Arts in New York, where he earned a master's degree in filmmaking, he directed TV, documentary and commercials. Trengrove has also emerged as a theater director. Early in his television career, Trengove was involved in the production of the television series Hard Copy , The Lab and Bay of Plenty . In 2010 he was honored for his work on the miniseries Hopeville at the Rose d'Or Light Entertainment Festival .

The film Die Wunde is Trengove's feature film debut. The film celebrated its world premiere in January 2017 as part of the Sundance Film Festival's World Cinema Dramatic Competition . On February 9, 2017, he opened the main program of the Panorama section at the 67th Berlinale , which was dedicated to the topic of "History of Blacks in North America, South America and Africa". Even if South Africa was the first African country to allow same-sex marriages, the population is largely homophobic. Trengove describes in the film the circumcision ritual of the Xhosa and secret homosexual relationships. In Queer you can read that the director is shaking two South African taboos, as there is hardly any talk about homosexuality or the controversial Ukwaluka ritual.

At the beginning of October 2017 it was announced that The Wound of South Africa had been submitted as a nomination in the category Best Foreign Language Film for the 2018 Academy Awards . After the announcement of this submission, tribal leaders of the Xhosa expressed fundamental reservations, as the rite of initiation of their ethnic group was placed in the foreground in the film . The transition of young people to the group of adults is a sacred process, and the producers made a joke of it, was the criticism. The chief spokesman said he was disappointed that the government allowed the film to be broadcast. In mid-December 2017 it was announced that the film had been shortlisted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences .

Trengove is a member of the Against Jealousy artists' association .
