The focus was on the film country Mexico , which was represented as a partner country of the European Film Market (EFM) and also with contributions in the various sections of the festival. International jury
In December 2016, Paul Verhoeven was presented as the jury president of the Berlinale 2017 , who had returned as a film director after ten years of abstinence from the screen with the French-language cinema production Elle . Verhoeven is considered the most successful director in the Netherlands and is one of the most important, but also most controversial, Hollywood filmmakers. His works represent a “tightrope walk between artistic aspirations and sex, mixed with striking comedic or violent effects” and no other director confronted censorship as often as he did.
Verhoeven was never represented with a film in the Berlinale competition. His Hollywood production RoboCop (1987) was included in the retrospective of the 50th Berlinale in 2000 , while Verhoeven himself was present at the Berlinale Talent Campus in 2013 on the panel "Follow Your Instincts: Filmmaking According to Paul Verhoeven" and his approach and point of view featured on the US and European manufacturing landscape. Berlinale director Dieter Kosslick highlighted Verhoeven's “creative, diverse boldness and […] willingness to experiment” as well as his work in the most diverse genres in Europe and the United States.
The jury president was supported by several jury members who were named at the official presentation of the program on January 31, 2017:
Dora Bouchoucha , Tunisian film producer
Ólafur Elíasson , Icelandic artist
Maggie Gyllenhaal , American actress
Julia Jentsch , German actress ( Actor Award 2005)
Diego Luna , Mexican actor and director
Wang Quan'an , Chinese director and screenwriter ( Golden Bear 2007, Screenplay Award 2010)
