Askold Kurov (born 1974 in Uzbekistan ) is an Uzbek documentary filmmaker.

Life

Born in Uzbekistan, Kurov has lived in Russia since 1991 . There he studied philology , theology and theater studies and later documentary film at the Moscow Marina Razbezhkina Film School, where he graduated in 2010.

In 2012 he directed a sub-segment of the award-winning documentary Winter, Go Away! . His subsequent films Leninland and Children 404 were shown at various festivals and received critical acclaim.

In his films Kurov primarily addresses human rights problems and social conflicts in today's Russia. This is also the case in his current film The Trial: The State of Russia vs Oleg Sentov , in which he focuses on the extradition of the Ukrainian film director Oleh Sentsow to Moscow. The film was shown at the Berlinale 2017 in the Berlinale Special series .

Kurov's film Novaya won the Willy Brandt Documentary Film Award for best film at the Human Rights Film Festival Berlin in 2019 .
