Sarah Maldoror (born July 19, 1929 in Condom , Gers as Sarah Durados , † April 13, 2020 in Saint-Denis ) was a French film director .

Life

Sarah Maldoror's parents immigrated to France from Guadeloupe before she was born . She chose her stage name Maldoror based on the lyrical work Die Gesänge des Maldoror . During her studies at the Center d'Art Dramatique de la Rue Blanche in Paris, she met her future husband, Mário Pinto de Andrade . On a scholarship she was allowed to study film with him from 1961 to 1962 in Moscow with Mark Semjonowitsch Donskoy . During this time she met the Senegalese writer Ousmane Sembène . On her return she worked as an assistant to Gillo Pontecorvo for his war film Battle of Algiers .

With Des fusils pour Banta Maldoror made her debut in 1970 as a director for a feature film. She was the first woman to direct a feature film in Africa. Four more feature films followed by 1987: Sambizanga , Un dessert pour Constance , L'hôpital de Leningrad and Le passager du Tassili . With Sambizanga she filmed a story by the writer Luandino Vieira . In addition to her feature films, she directed several short and documentary films until 1998 .

On April 13, 2020, Maldoror died at the age of 90 during the COVID-19 pandemic in France as a result of a SARS-CoV-2 infection.
