Norman McLaren, 1956 Laureate

The jury's prize, which was awarded the Silver Bear, honors the second best short film in the competition after the Golden Bear at the annual Berlin Film Festival . The prize was first awarded at the fifth edition of the film festival in 1955 as the "Small Silver Plaque". From 1956 to 1957, untitled Silver Bears were awarded. From 1958 to 1964 the award was known as the “Special Prize for a Particularly Valuable Short Film”. Since 1965 the official name has been the “Jury Prize”, while from 1980 to 1981 the “Special Jury Prize” had been introduced. The international short film jury, which is mostly composed of international filmmakers, votes on the award.
