The prize was first awarded at the fifth edition of the film festival in 1955 as the "Small Silver Plaque". From 1956 to 1957, untitled Silver Bears were awarded. From 1958 to 1964 the award was known as the “Special Prize for a Particularly Valuable Short Film”.
