George Sluizer
George Sluizer (born June 25, 1932 in Paris , † September 20, 2014 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch film director born in France .
Career
Sluizer studied at the film school in Paris from 1954 to 1956. He gained his first experience as an assistant director to Michael Anderson and Bert Haanstra . He worked for Anderson in 1956 on his hit film Around the World in 80 Days . His first film was the 29-minute short film Land aus Menschenhand , for which he received a Silver Bear as a special prize at the 1961 Berlinale . Sluizer initially only made documentaries for television. In 1972 he made his feature film debut with the Dutch-Brazilian co-production Joao und das Messer . He presented this film in competition at the 1972 Berlinale .
He landed his greatest success with the thriller Without a Trace , with which the Dutch actress Johanna ter Steege achieved the international breakthrough. Sluizer had also written the script for this film based on a novel by Tim Krabbé , which he then filmed again in 1993 under the title Without a trace for Hollywood with Jeff Bridges , Kiefer Sutherland , Nancy Travis and Sandra Bullock .
In 1993 he made Dark Blood, the last film in which River Phoenix had a role. However, this died before filming was finished. Sluizer completed the film in 2012; the premiere took place on September 27, 2012 at the Dutch Film Festival . In Germany, the film was shown at the 2013 Berlinale, among others .
With the films Utz and Der Commissioner he was seen again in the competition of the Berlinale 1992 and the Berlinale 1998 . In 2002 he filmed the novel The Stone Raft by Nobel Prize winner José Saramago .
In 1983 he won the professional award of the Golden Calf .
After the premiere of his thriller Dark Blood , Sluizer withdrew from the film business. He died in Amsterdam in September 2014 at the age of 82.
