action

Jeff Harriman and Diane Shaver are out and about together. The two stop at a rest stop where Diane wants to do some shopping and go to the bathroom. However, it disappears without a trace.

The police can't solve the case, so Jeff investigates on his own. Three years later he meets Rita Baker, who becomes his new girlfriend. Nevertheless, at the same time he is still looking for his girlfriend, who disappeared three years ago and from whom he still cannot get away. He hides this from Rita until she finds out for herself that her boyfriend is still following in the footsteps of Diane.

A little later, the chemistry teacher Barney Cousins contacts Jeff and claims to be able to answer his questions about the disappearance of Diane. Jeff should only get the answers to all of his questions if he is ready to go through the same thing as Diane. After much hesitation, Jeff is ready to do so out of sheer desperation and voluntarily drinks a coffee that has been treated with an anesthetic. As follows, it turns out that Diane was kidnapped by cousins and buried alive. Even the drugged Jeff is buried alive by cousins.

Rita also does research and locates cousins. She finds the buried Jeff and saves him. A fight ensues in which Jeff kills the kidnapper.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the remake was "inferior product" and a "complete disappointment" compared to the original. He praised the "complex" character of Barney but strongly criticized the character of Rita and numerous scenes in the film.

Roger Ebert compared the film to the original in the Chicago Sun-Times . While he called the original a masterpiece, he called the remake "laughable, stupid and tasteless".

“At the same time familiar with perpetrator, victim and persecutor, a story develops for the viewer in which (apart from the inappropriately drastic ending) the psychological tension is in the foreground. Skillfully staged and well played, the thriller is overall more interesting than the average of the genre. "

Awards

Jeff Bridges and the film for Best Horror Film were nominated for a Saturn Award in 1994.
