George Hearn

George Hearn (born June 18, 1934 in St. Louis ) is an American musical actor .

Life

Hearn first studied philosophy . After taking lessons from actress Irene Dailey, he began his theater career at the Shakespeare Festival in New York .

He was best known as a musical performer. In 1980 he replaced Len Cariou in the title role of the original production of Stephen Sondheim's musical Sweeney Todd . He later starred opposite Angela Lansbury in a televised recording of the production. In 1983 he played Albin in the world premiere of the musical La Cage aux Folles by Jerry Herman . He received the Tony Award for his performance . In 1985 he was involved in a concert performance of the Sondheim musical " Follies " with Barbara Cook , Mandy Patinkin and Lee Remick . In 1986 he repeated his role as Albin in the West End (London) premiere of "La Cage aux Folles". In the early 1990s, Hearn appeared in several episodes of Angela Lansbury's television series " Murder Is Her Hobby ". In 1994 he received a second Tony Award for his performance as Max in the Broadway premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Sunset Boulevard . In 2000 he stepped in for the sick opera singer Bryn Terfel in a concert performance of "Sweeney Todd" with the New York Philharmonic at Patti LuPone's side . In 2004, he returned as a Wizard of Oz in the musical Wicked - The Witches of Oz at the Broadway back. In 2008 he played in the musical " The Visit " (based on Friedrich Dürrenmatt's play The Visit of the Old Lady ) by John Kander and Fred Ebb at the side of Chita Rivera in Arlington, Virginia.
