Sweeney Todd
Sweeney Todd is a fictional serial killer whose story is set in 19th century London . He was a barber and owned a shop on Fleet Street in London. In the 19th century, barbers not only trimmed beards, but also cut hair and performed medical treatments such as pulling teeth or blood-letting . Sweeney Todd, who felt he had been treated unfairly and swore vengeance for the whole world, killed many of his customers and gave the bodies to Mrs. Lovett's "pie shop" next door.
Earlier story
Todd first appeared in a Penny Dreadful ( novelette ) in 1846. The story was called The String of Pearls: A Romance (The pearl necklace: A story) and was probably by Thomas Perst written that at that time other macabre Describing stories and shady people.
Adaptations
- 1936: Film based on the title Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Death Slaughter in the lead role.
- 1979: Sweeney Todd comes as a musical by Stephen Sondheim at the Broadway . It later served as a template for the 2007 feature film.
- 1982: American television production entitled Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street starring George Hearn and Angela Lansbury .
- 1998: Television production directed by John Schlesinger entitled The Tale of Sweeney Todd . Ben Kingsley and Joanna Lumley starred .
- 2006: TV production for the BBC with Ray Winstone in the title role.
- 2007: Sweeney Todd - The Devilish Barber from Fleet Street with Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter in the lead roles and directed by Tim Burton based on the musical by Stephen Sondheim .
- 2018: Two-part radio play production with Jacques Breuer as Sweeney Todd, published as episodes 132 and 133 of the Horror Cabinet series .
There are also two stage plays that deal with the theme of Sweeney Todd. One titled The String of Pearls: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street from 1847. A 1937 play called Sweeney Todd also tells the story.
In 2012, the British author Terry Pratchett took up the character of Sweeney Todd in his novel Dodger ( German Dark Scoundrels ), in which the title character overpowers the barber and thus becomes a hero.
There is also a themed area about Sweeney Todd in the London Dungeon .

In two books, author Peter Haining argues for the existence of Sweeney Todd in the early 19th century. Other research found that Haining's sources are unusable and that Sweeney Todd is a fictional character.
