Ray Winstone
Raymond "Ray" Andrew Winstone (born February 19, 1957 in Hackney , London ) is a British actor .
Career
As a boy, Winstone trained in boxing . He won the London Schoolboy Championship three times and competed twice for England . After finishing school he gave up boxing and studied acting at the Corona School in Hammersmith , where he was told to leave after a year. In 1977, Winstone's perseverance managed to cast the BBC for a production of the play Scum by Roy Minton and was selected for one of the leading roles. Due to the explosive nature of the subject and the violence shown, this television game was not approved for broadcast on the BBC and was only shown on television for the first time in 1991. In the meantime, a film was made based on the play in 1979, in which Winstone also played a newcomer in a juvenile detention center for juveniles who had committed offenses.
Winstone's role in Scum - Scum seems to have been groundbreaking for his later casts, in which he is often seen as a tough, serene and violent man. He starred in Quadrophenia , in That Summer (for which he was nominated for an award from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts as the most promising newcomer ), in Ladybird, Ladybird , in Nil by Mouth (for which he was the second nomination, this time as best actor, received) as well as in Face , in Sexy Beast and in Ripley's Game . In 2003 he played the eponymous Tudor king in the two-part television drama Henry VIII .
However, Winstone was also cast for rather atypical roles in which he could live out his more soulful sides. He played a comic role in Martha meets Frank, Daniel & Laurence and was the romantic lead in Fanny & Elvis .
In 2006 he was the bloodthirsty Mr. French in Martin Scorsese's gangster epic Departed - Among enemies, the dreaded right-hand man of the no less brutal boss Frank Costello ( Jack Nicholson ). In 2007 he took the title role in Robert Zemeckis' animated epic Beowulf , starring alongside Anthony Hopkins , Angelina Jolie , John Malkovich and Robin Wright Penn .
His TV series appearances are numerous, for example in Robin Hood (1984–1986) as the hot-blooded daredevil Will Scarlet .
Personal
He has been married to his wife Elaine, with whom he has three daughters, since 1979. The two met while filming That Summer .
