Percy Jackson - Thieves in Olympus (original title Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief ) is an American fantasy film and at the same time the film adaptation of the first novel in the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan from 2010 and directed by Chris Columbus . The cinema release was in Germany on February 11, 2010 and in the United States one day later. It stars Logan Lerman as Percy Jackson and Brandon T. Percy (Perseus) Jackson is a teenager attending a New York school. Together with his handicapped friend Grover, he leads an inconspicuous life there, although his dyslexia and ADHD cause problems in class. He finds relaxation in the water, where he can switch off and think. While visiting a Greek museum, he is attacked by his assistant teacher, who transforms into a fury , who demands a ruler's lightning that he has allegedly stolen. However, his friend Grover and his Latin teacher Mr. Brunner can intervene in time and drive away the fury. Brunner orders Grover to take Percy to a safe place. Grover informs the mother of Percy, who is still in the dark, and who immediately wants to flee with the two of them to a secret location. On the way there they are attacked by a Minotaur who appears to kill his mother. Percy then kills the Minotaur.
Percy and Grover arrive at "Camp Half Blood", where Percy learns that he is the son of the sea god Poseidon and thus a demigod and that his friend Grover is a satyr who was commissioned by the gods to protect Percy. Brunner turns out to be Chiron , a centaur . He informs him that Zeus ' ruler's bolt has been stolen and Percy is accused of being a thief. In addition, he learns from suddenly appearing Hades that his mother was not killed, but kidnapped into the underworld . Together with Grover and his new girlfriend Annabeth, a daughter of Athena whom he met at camp, he sets out to free his mother from Hades and to prove by the summer solstice that he did not steal the ruler's lightning. They find help in Luke, the son of Hermes , whom he met at "Camp Half Blood". From him he receives his "favorite protective shield", winged shoes with which one can fly, and a magical map that shows them the way to three pearls that will help you get out of the underworld. In the underworld he confronts Hades, who lives there with his wife Persephone , and tries to convince him of his innocence. But Hades accidentally discovers the ruler lightning he is looking for in Percy's shield, which Luke has given him, supposedly for his protection. Hades takes the lightning and wants to kill Percy, his mother and friends, but Persephone, who no longer wants to endure Hades' cruelty, manages to take the lightning away from him and thus render him harmless. She is not afraid of Hades, because she is already in hell anyway. Then Percy, his mother and Annabeth flee the underworld with the help of the three previously collected pearls. Since each pearl can only free one person, Grover has to stay behind.
After the three have escaped from the underworld, they meet Luke, who admits to have stolen the ruler's bolt to provoke a war of the gods so that the "new generation" can replace the old gods. Percy then defeats him in a duel, in which he uses his telekinetic powers for the first time and uses them to move water in a controlled manner. He steps onto Mount Olympus via the roof of the Empire State Building and gives Zeus the lightning bolt. In doing so, he prevented a war between the gods. As a reward, Zeus grants him a wish. Percy wishes Grover to be freed from the underworld and is also given a few minutes to speak with his father, who, like all other gods, is actually prohibited by Zeus' decree from speaking to his half-human children. Then Percy returns to "Camp Half Blood" and trains with Annabeth for upcoming tasks.
In a scene in the middle of the credits, Percy's stepfather opens the fridge and sees Medusa's severed head. The snake hairs stand up and the sound of his petrification can be heard in the credits that follow.

Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski were hired as screenwriters . Thor Freudenthal directed while Chris Columbus acted as producer. Most of the cast from the first film remained, including Logan Lerman , Brandon T. Jackson , Alexandra Daddario , Sean Bean , Kevin McKidd and Catherine Keener . Pierce Brosnan no longer played the role of the Centaur Chiron, instead Anthony Head was hired for this role. Luke Camilleri no longer plays the role of Dionysus ("Mr.D"), he is replaced by Stanley Tucci in the sequel . The role of Dylan Neal is also replaced by Nathan Fillion , who played Hermes.
Differences between film and book
There are sometimes big differences between the novel and the film adaptation. These are for example:
- Percy is only twelve in the book, but sixteen in the movie.
- In the book, Percy kills Mrs. Dodds, who turns into a fury, with the ballpoint pen he received from Mr. Brunner. In the film she is driven out by Mr. Brunner and Grover.
- In the film it is already known that Percy is the son of Poseidon, in the book it only becomes clear later.
- In the film, Annabeth is portrayed as a passionate warrior - but in the book she is hardly interested in sword fighting. It is more dedicated to the scientific fields (especially architecture). She is also described in the book as blonde, but in the film she initially has brown hair.
- Grover is already a full-fledged "keeper" in the book, but was unable to complete his last assignment successfully. By accompanying Percy, he hopes to get a "search license" that will enable him to search for Pan . In the film, however, Grover is still a “junior protector” who has not yet earned his horns.
- In the book, Dionysus is the director of Camp Half-Blood and becomes “Mr. D ”called.
- The division of the huts is not discussed in detail in the film. In the book, each of the Olympian gods has a hut where their children live in the camp.

- The magic pearls are given to Percy as a gift by a nereid after he reaches LA with Annabeth and Grover .
- In the book, Grover and not Percy wears the flying shoes.
- In the book, Hades also has the helmet of darkness stolen. Hades has no interest in the ruler's lightning or in a war, as the war would bring too many sacrifices and thus unnecessarily expand his realm of the dead and bring even more chaos to the already overcrowded underworld.
- Persephone does not appear in the book; she plays an important role in the film.
- At the end of the book, there is no fight between Percy and Luke on the Empire State Building. Luke lures Percy into the woods inside the camp on the pretext of saying goodbye. There he summons a scorpion to kill Percy and disappears from camp. Percy can kill the scorpion, but is stung by him and seriously injured. It was only thanks to Chiron's medical knowledge that Percy survived.
