Percy's seventh grade at Meriwether Prep for Problem Children is coming to an end. Year round, Percy has campaigned for a homeless orphan boy named Tyson who is allowed to go to school as a charitable act but is bullied by everyone else . Tyson is exceptionally tall and strong, but also weak and quickly desperate. The night before the final day of school, Percy is plagued by nightmares that his best friend, the satyr Grover Underwood , is in danger.
During a dodgeball game as part of the final exams, some guest students turn out to be man-eating laistrygons who want to destroy Percy. With the help of Tyson, who can immunize himself against the fire attacks, and Annabeth Chase , a classmate from Camp Half-Blood, Percy can defeat the monsters and escape together with the two friends. After a taxi the Graiai have come to the camp, they get into a battle against monsters bronze at the camp boundary. The usual protective spell that arises from the Thalia spruce is weakened. Tyson smashes the beasts and turns out to be a Cyclops baby. The magical mist obscured his one-eyed face from Percy.
It turns out that the magical tree of the Thalia has been poisoned and is now slowly dying, and with it the wards. Dionysus , who runs the camp, blames Chiron for what his position as class coordinator costs. Instead, the spirit of Tantalos is set, whose only goal in camp is to recover from his punishment and take revenge on the heroes for everything experienced.
Poseidon now confesses to Tyson as his father, which is not uncommon since Cyclops are almost always children of the sea god. Percy is therefore laughed at by everyone, only Hephaestus ' son Charles Beckendorf tries to teach Tyson in blacksmithing, in which Tyson is evidently a natural. Meanwhile, Percy has more and more dreams about Grover, and it turns out that they correspond to reality, as Grover has established an empathy link between himself and Percy and can thus inform his friend when he is in danger. Grover is held captive by Polyphemus on an island in the Sea of Monsters . The mentally limited Polyphemus, who has not been able to see well since his encounter with Odysseus , thinks Grover is a Cyclops and wants to marry him. Grover can, however, delay the wedding by repeatedly ruffling the bridal train he is supposed to weave at night.
After a chariot race in which the camp was attacked by Stymphalian birds , Annabeth and Percy speculate that Polyphemus possesses the Golden Fleece , which nature can strengthen and heal. They want to persuade Tantalos to give them the job of finding the fleece so that they can save Grover and the camp. But Tantalos gives the order to Clarisse, a daughter of Ares.
One night on the beach, Percy meets the god Hermes , who persuades him to break out with Annabeth and Tyson to find the fleece. He gives Percy a thermos with binders and some useful vitamin candies. Hermes hopes that Percy can get his son Luke Castellan , who works for the Titans, back on track.
With Hermes' help, the three get on the cruise ship Princess Andromeda . During the night it seems to be deserted, but is populated by zombie-like passengers and also serves as the headquarters of an army of monsters under Luke Castellan. Luke takes the three friends prisoner and now admits to have poisoned Thalia's tree, although she saved his life several times during his lifetime. Luke wants to resurrect Kronos in order to overrun the camp and later the Olympus with him and the titans. After Castellan tries unsuccessfully to get Annabeth on his side, he orders the killing of the three.
However, Percy, Tyson and Annabeth escape with Hermes' artifacts and seek refuge in a hideout once built by Grover, Thalia, Annabeth and Luke. The Hydra , which the three will soon have to fight against, resides nearby . The monster is destroyed by Clarisse, who goes to the Sea of Monsters in a ship controlled by zombie soldiers to do her job. She reluctantly takes the three on board.
In order to get into the sea of monsters, the ship has to pass the sea beasts Skylla and Charybdis for better or worse . Charybdis lives on the ocean floor and creates a huge vortex , while the many-headed sea serpent Scylla picks people up from a rock at lightning speed. When the engine room is damaged, Tyson descends to repair it. When the ship exploded, Annabeth and Percy were caught in one lifeboat and Clarisse in the other. Tyson remains missing and appears to have died in the explosion.
On the boat, Annabeth shares the prophecy that the next child of one of the big three, who turns sixteen, can determine the fate of Mount Olympus. A little later they arrive on the island of the sorceress Circe , who runs a wellness hotel there and briefly turns Percy into a guinea pig. With Hermes' vitamin candy, Percy not only transforms himself, but also some pirates back again. He and Annabeth can then flee on their ship, the Queen Anne's Revenge .
Another incident occurs on the island of the Sirens : Annabeth wants - tied to the mast according to Odysseus' example - to listen to their singing, but is able to cut their bonds and almost swim to the island. When the two arrive at Polyphem's Island, they not only see the golden fleece, which is guarded by a herd of man-eating sheep, but also Grover and Clarisse, who are meanwhile also under Polyphem's control. Due to Clarisse's indiscretion, Polyphemus now realizes Grover's true identity and wants to eat him up in the evening in order to marry Clarisse instead.
Percy and Annabeth manage to free the prisoners. On the island there is now a major battle between the Cyclops and the half-bloods. When Polyphemus is about to win and he is about to eat Percy, Tyson appears unexpectedly, who apparently survived the ship's sinking with the help of a hippocampus . Although Polyphemus destroys the Queen Anne's Revenge , Percy and his friends are able to steal the fleece, escape with the hippocamps and reach Miami . Once there, they put their money together for a flight ticket so that Clarisse can deliver the fleece to the camp on time and complete her assignment. The rest of them are captured by Luke shortly afterwards and brought on board the ship. Percy transmits a confession of Castellan's for his atrocities and the innocence of Chiron to the dining table of the camp via Iris message , whereupon Dionysus fires Tantalus and sends him back to the underworld.
While Percy fights Luke aboard the Princess Andromeda , Chiron's friends are freed and quickly brought to camp. On the way, Percy not only learns that Chiron is Kronos' son, but also the real reason for the big three's oath not to father mortal children: According to a prophecy, the next heroic child will be one of the big three who turns sixteen , either overthrow or save Olympus and its gods at your own discretion. After arriving at the camp, Clarisse is celebrated as a heroine and Thalia's protective magic is regenerated with the fleece.
After using his blacksmithing to help Annabeth and Percy win a chariot race, Tyson leaves camp to work in his father Poseidon's forge and make weapons for the upcoming Titan War.
The last scene of the book shows that the golden fleece exudes too strong an effect: Thalia is reborn out of the tree as a fifteen-year-old, as she could only age more slowly in the shape of the spruce. The poisoning of the tree and the subsequent regeneration by the fleece were part of Kronos' plans to shift the prophecy from Percy to the older Thalia and thereby reduce the time until the war.
