Rick Riordan (born June 5, 1964 in San Antonio , Texas ), full name Richard Russell Riordan Jr. , is an American writer , best known for his series of novels about the demigod Percy Jackson .

He achieved his breakthrough in 2005 with the book Thieves in Olympus , the first part of the five-volume Percy Jackson series, which is about a group of young people with elements from Greco-Roman mythology . The books have been translated into 37 languages and sold 33 million copies in the United States. The first two parts of the series were filmed by 20th Century Fox in 2010 and 2013 .

Riordan's Tres Navarre series won the three most important national awards in the mystery genre - the Edgar, the Anthony and the Shamus. He also wrote the book series Heroes of Olympus and had the idea for The 39 Characters , the first volume of which he wrote himself. He also wrote the book series The Kane Chronicles , Magnus Chase and The Adventures of Apollo .

Life

Riordan was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. He graduated from Alamo Heights High School and first attended music classes at North Texas State to become a guitarist. He then moved to the University of Texas at Austin and studied English and history; he received his teaching qualification in these subjects from the University of Texas at San Antonio . He taught English and social sciences at the Presidio Hill School in San Francisco for eight years. In California and Texas, he taught Greek mythology in middle school (6th to 8th grade).

Rick Riordan, 2007

As a child, Riordan was fascinated by fantasy and read The Lord of the Rings ten times. Riordan was fascinated by this world at a very early age and as a descendant of creative parents, he wrote his first story at the age of 13, but it was never published. His mother Lyn Belisle was a teacher, musician and artist and his father Rick Riordan Sr. was also a teacher and ceramist, both of which encouraged their son to develop his talent. His first two published works were two short stories that appeared in the University of Texas literary magazine.

Rick married East Coast native Becky on the couple's birthday in 1985. They have two sons, Haley and Patrick. The family moved from San Antonio to Boston in June 2013 as their eldest son, Haley, was entering college there.

The successful author has since left school and is now only devoting himself to developing his stories.

Create

Riordan wrote adult mystery novels while teaching full-time. The first novel was called Big Red Tequila . It was the first book in the Tres Navarre series to be about an unlicensed private investigator in Riordan's hometown of San Antonio.

It was his son Haley, who him to the Percy Jackson series as a bedtime story inspired. Haley had been diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia and this led Riordan to create the main character with ADHD and dyslexia as well. While studying dyslexia and ADHD, Riordan learned that dyslexics and ADHD children are creative and more likely to think outside the box. Riordan himself says of himself by describing Percy as a dyslexic, he wants to show all the children with this weakness his respect.

Inspired also by a school project “creative writing”, in which Riordan's students were to come up with adventures about Greek demigods, the story of Percy began to take shape. It took him three nights to tell the story to his son. His son was delighted and asked his father to write down the story. Riordan tested the story on his students before the book was published in 2005. Four sequels followed, with the last book The Last Goddess ended this book series Thieves in Olympus in 2009 .

Since then, Riordan has written the trilogy The Kane Chronicles and the series The Heroes of Olympus . In the Kane Chronicles (2010–2012) he focused on Egyptian mythology; The Heroes of Olympus were the sequel to the Percy Jackson series. Riordan also helped develop the 39 Characters and their spin-offs and wrote his first book, The 39 Characters - The Catacombs of Paris (2008). His most recent publications are three books in the Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard series , which are based on Norse mythology. The first book in his The Adventures of Apollo series , which are based on Greek mythology, The Adventures of Apollo 1: The Hidden Oracle , was published in May 2016. Three more novels have followed since then.

Since 2018 Riordan has been supporting a segment of his Disney Hyperion publishing house , which publishes mythologically inspired books for young people by members of the respective cultures under the imprint of Rick Riordan Presents .
