action

The third volume in the series takes place a few days after the adventures of the second volume. Apollo , Meg and the satyr Grover Underwood are in the labyrinth of Daedalus in search of the fires. You are under constant attack from Strigae . Grover, the satyr, unleashes the cry of Pan , god of the wilderness, and drives away the Strigae. The tunnel collapses with the scream. The three get to Aeithales, which later turns out to be Meg's former home. There they come across nature spirits in the form of talking plants. They are friends of Grover who are suffering badly from the forest fires caused by the burning labyrinth. Mellie, a cloud nymph, asks Apollo and Grover to look after their husband, a satyr named Hedge, who is in a military equipment store. Once there, they fight together against Naevius Sutorius Macro , who is a servant of Caligula. You reach the exit and from a hiding place you notice a talking horse that is making contact with another person. On their way back, Apollo reveals that the horse is called Incitatus and that the third emperor is Caligula, one of the most feared emperors of the Roman Empire.

Back in hiding, Mellie reveals that Jason Grace and Piper McLean were in the maze. Apollo and Meg drive to Piper the next day. They learn that she has to move to Oklahoma with her father . Later they go to Jason's boarding school with Piper. He tells them that he occasionally fights monsters disguised as teachers. But he wants to support her on her mission. He secretly tells Apollo that he met Sybille Herophile in the labyrinth and said that one of them would die the next time the duo came. Fearing Piper's death, Jason keeps this to himself and breaks up with her.

On the same day, Apollo, Meg, Jason and Piper go to the huge Caligulas fleet, which consists of 50 yachts . They are trying to steal Caligula's shoes, which, according to the prophecy, lead the way. But they are noticed and attacked and captured by Pandai, Caligula's loyal servants. You can break free with the help of a friendly pandai named Crest. You get to the clothing yacht and find Caligula's shoes. But they are discovered by Incitatus and brought to the emperor. Jason engages Caligula in a fight and is fatally wounded twice. Shortly before he dies, Jason calls wind ghosts to bring everyone to Piper's house safely. In desperation, Piper blames Apollo for Jason's death. Apollo and Meg drive back to Aeithales.

The next day, Apollo, Meg, Grover and Crest, who knows a secret entrance, make their way to the labyrinth. They put Crest on guard in front of the entrance. The emperor's shoes guide them through the labyrinth. You have to solve puzzles that are supposed to lead to Herophiles. But Apollo solves one thing wrong and they end up in an abyss in which huge flames burn. Apollo tries to find the cause of the fire and discovers the still burning body of Helios, the former sun god. He is responsible for the forest fires. Apollo promises him to take revenge on Medea , a witch with whom they had already had a small encounter and who uses the body of Helios. Helios clears the way and they get to Herophile. There they are confronted with another prophecy. With the help of Meliai , ash spirits that Meg had previously planted, they reach the exit and kill Medea and Incitatus. But they sacrifice the life of Crest, who guarded the entrance. Apollo and Meg entrust the Meliai with the safety of Aeithales and continue their journey. Piper moves to Oklahoma and Jason is taken to Camp Jupiter for the funeral.
