The 39 Characters (English original title: The 39 Clues ) is a series of adventure books that began in 2008 by Rick Riordan and was completed by C. Alexander London in September 2016 with the 26th book.

action

The series is about the two siblings Dan and Amy Cahill (11 and 14 years old), whose grandmother Grace Cahill dies one day and leaves a strange legacy. In a video, she offered all participants in the opening of the will a choice: either they should take a million dollars from their assets or embark on a kind of scavenger hunt. Although the siblings do not really understand the principle of the hunt, they decide against the million and go on the hunt for the signs that promise power over the world. In addition to them, six other teams go on the hunt.

From now on, the siblings will travel all over the world, supported by their au pair Nellie Gomez. They learn that many Cahills have helped hide the signs in the past and that they have been fighting over it for 500 years. But the hunt is not only difficult and mysterious, it is also very dangerous, because the other teams try to get each other out of the way again and again. Most teams try to get Amy and Dan out of the way because they consider them dangerous.

The five family branches

There are four different branches in the Cahill family: Janus, Ekaterina, Lucian, Tomas . William McIntrey warns Amy and Dan in Volume 1 about the mysterious fifth branch, the madrigals . All teams know which branch they belong to, just Dan and Amy don't. It is only in Volume 7 that they learn that they are madrigals.

Gideon and Olivia Cahill had four children: Katherine, Luke, Thomas and Jane. Gideon sacrificed his life and property to find a cure for the plague. The serum he developed also really protected against the plague, but had unexpected side effects. In the people who took the serum, it changed the DNA and developed unusual abilities. Each of the four Cahill children received a part of the formula for making it. Gideon was killed in a fire that destroyed his laboratory. His leftover children suspected each other of sabotage, and in the end the family broke up. They all went away and started their own Cahill clan branch: Katherine - Ekaterina, Luke - Lucian, Thomas - Tomas, Jane - Janus. The branches of the family have been fighting each other for centuries to find the next ingredient to make the serum with. Everyone wants to have the main resource in which all the forces of the four branches are united, not just that of their own branch. When a branch of the family comes close to the solution, the madrigals stop them. Therefore they are hated by everyone else.

Each branch of the family has special abilities: The Ekaterina are particularly intelligent, the Lucians are particularly cunning, the Tomas are particularly strong and the Janus are very talented.

The history of the madrigals

When the fire broke out, no one knew that Gideon's wife Olivia was pregnant with the fifth child: Madeleine Cahill, founder of the Madrigals branch. Olivia initially supported her husband. Later, however, she was appalled by what greed had done in her family. Her children were scattered everywhere and had their own agenda, she was alone with the baby. Olivia watched with horror as the serum drove the family apart. She raised Madeleine to believe that bringing the family back together was more important than anything. Madeleine Cahill swore an oath on her mother's deathbed that she would do everything in her power for it.

Rules of the madrigals
  • Madrigals take their mother's name.
  • MC knew the madrigals had to be the best of the best. These included Amelia Earhart , Anne Bonny , Mary Read , Nanny Sharpe , Mother Teresa , Frederick Douglass , Roberto Clemente .
  • The madrigals are the only branch in which active status must be acquired. To be born madrigals is not enough. You have to go through rigorous tests without even knowing it. The secret of the MA remains untouched. A couple of these trials arise from disputes with other branches or from character hunting.
