Bedtime stories (regional colloquially bedtime ) are short stories , the children are told up to the age of about 12 years before going to sleep. As a rule, the parents read these stories to their children, but there is now a wide range in other media, especially radio and television .

Reading a story before going to sleep is a regular evening ritual in many young families. 90% of parents read something to their children between the ages of four and six in the evening. Even before the age of four, 71% of children enjoy a bedtime story. Even with older children up to 12 years of age who can already read themselves, the proportion is still 60%. Even children cannot switch off "at the push of a button" and fall asleep. Fixed, familiar rituals in the evening will help them relax and fall asleep better.

The term "bedtime story" was coined by Jella Lepman , who collected such stories, and has been in use since around 1950. As part of a study, it was found that reading aloud in the evenings lays the foundation for optimal support for a child and makes a decisive contribution to reading socialization.

The station Rot-Weiß-Rot already had a good night program for children in its program, using the figure of the sandman. Der Ohrbär , a production by Rundfunks Berlin-Brandenburg in cooperation with NDR Info and WDR 5 , is a literary radio program broadcast in Germany for children between four and eight years of age.
