Käthe Recheis

Käthe Recheis (born March 11, 1928 in Engelhartszell , Upper Austria ; † May 29, 2015 in Linz ) was an Austrian author for children and young people.

Life

Käthe Recheis was the youngest of four children. She went to school in Hörsching and Linz . After graduating from high school , she first worked as an editorial secretary and later headed the Austrian office of the International Catholic Migration Commission in Geneva from 1956 to 1960 .

In 1954, Hans Weigel published a story by Käthe Recheis in the anthology series Voices of the Present, which he published , for which she received the youth literature award of a magazine. Käthe Recheis had been a freelance writer since 1961 and lived alternately in Vienna and Hörsching. She made numerous trips to North and South America. Recheis was strongly committed to the concerns of the indigenous population and founded the association to support Indian schools together with one of their brothers, the doctor Romed Recheis . As an author and translator, she published 61 of her own books by 2004, including numerous children's books . She also published 13 titles with original Indian texts.

In 2011, both schools, both the elementary school and the secondary school, in her home town of Hörsching were named after her. In 2018, the Käthe-Recheis-Gasse in Vienna- Donaustadt (22nd district, Seestadt Aspern) was named after her.

Her brother Athanasius Recheis OSB (1926-2006) was abbot of Seckau Abbey in Styria from 1984 to 1997 .
