Memorial to Michael Bond and the Paddington Bear in Paddington, London

Michael Bond began working as a writer after his military service. Like many budding colleagues, Bond first tried his hand at writing short stories. By chance he became aware of children's literature .

The first stories about Paddington Bear appeared in 1958, followed by 26 more volumes by 2017. Paddington was the name of a teddy he had given away and about which he wrote his first private stories.

The stories about Paddington, always several in one volume, delighted not only young audiences but also adult readers “of all ages” for decades. In addition to the plot, I also liked the illustrations, especially the illustrations by Peggy Fortnum and RW Alley. The translations of the stories that have occasionally been specially compiled in the German editions originate and a. by Käthe Recheis , Brigitte von Mechow and Peter Kent, but most of them by Tatjana Kröll.

Michael Bond was also a crime writer. From 1983 he published numerous detective novels with "Monsieur Pamplemousse" as a detective. He works for a restaurant guide, together with his dog "French fries", whose taste is decisive in the ratings. Occasionally in this completely non-criminalist occupation, the two heroes stumble from one wild adventure to the next, which the author describes in a drinkable manner. Some of the novels were also published in German and were rounded off by the publisher with cooking recipes for which - in part - Paul Bocuse and Vincent Klink were responsible.

Bond died in London in June 2017 at the age of 91 after a brief illness. He left behind his wife Susan and two children.
