The Verlag Bibliothek der Provinz is an Austrian publisher that has received many awards for its high quality books in terms of content and form from and about the Austrian cultural area.

history

The then teacher Richard Pils founded the publishing house in 1989, initially as a temporary project, was able to succeed and is still in charge today. The provincial library is located in the Angerdorf Großwolfgers near Weitra in the upper Waldviertel . The focus of the publishing program is on Austrian literature and fiction, regionalia, photo and art books as well as children's books. Over 1700 titles had appeared by 2017. In 2015, the publisher employed twelve people. The publisher's books "are printed in small editions and stored until they have found a buyer at full price." "The lateral entrant brought and publishes the books that he would like to buy himself."

According to Renate Just, the publisher offers “not only a wealth of highly aesthetic, but also socially critical Waldviertel books [.], Exquisite photo volumes , but also selected literature in beautiful editions, from Stifter to Tabori to Achternbusch, biographical volumes about Thomas Bernhard and Axel Corti , multiple award-winning children's books. ”Pils publishers' favorites include u. a. the author and "playmaker" George Tabori , "the publisher's icon", and the writer Thomas Bernhard , for whom he had a book sculpture set up in his homestead. The provincial library has dedicated a complete edition to the director, writer and painter Herbert Achternbusch , who has lived in the Waldviertel since the late 1990s , after all German publishers had refused to continue publishing him.

In 2000, Pils considered the five-volume series of landscape portraits by photographer Gerhard Trumler named after minerals - especially the fourth volume - to be “the most beautiful book I have ever made”. The photo books on Austrian cultural landscapes were published from 1994 to 2005 and are accompanied by texts by the Austrian poet Adalbert Stifter from his work Bunte Steine .

Illustrators like Angelika Kaufmann or Linda Wolfsgruber prefer to publish in the library of the province of Pils, "thanks to the love and openness that he shows the visual arts".

From 1996 to 2016, Pils hosted a literature and art festival at Raabs an der Thaya Castle , the Poet Festival . For three days every year in August, the publisher presented its new publications with readings and a diverse cultural program. Writers, artists and readers were given the opportunity to get to know each other personally.

Visitors to the publishing house in Großwolfgers can look at and read all of the publishing house's books in a reading room there.
