Richard Pils (born December 25, 1946 in Engerwitzdorf near Gallneukirchen , Upper Austria ) is an Austrian publisher and founder of the library of the province .

Life

Richard Pils is the son of a railroad worker and part-time farmer (or small house owner ) from the lower Mühlviertel and grew up in Wartberg ob der Aist and in Haselgraben .

Pils visited the federal teacher training institute in Linz. He studied mathematics and physics at the University of Innsbruck , pedagogy and German at the University of Klagenfurt , and sociology and law at the University of Linz . Finally he studied and completed painting and graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. First he worked as a special school teacher, then also as primary school director in Haid near Königswiesen .

Provincial Library

In the summer of 1989 he received a trade license to run a publishing house. Pils felt the need to "expand his library to include books that didn't exist before." He never wanted to found a publishing house, Pils said, but he wanted to put together a library "that gathers those questions that the world asks".

Pils is described in the media as an “extreme publisher” because of its bibliophilia and commitment to its authors, as “a fanatical reader and lover of poets” and as “someone who puts his heart and soul into literature and art, the undiscovered and of children's literature. ”The“ Buchästhet ”attaches great importance to high-quality editions, so that his publisher has already received many prizes for the best book design.

At the beginning the focus of his publishing program was on regionalia, "on Austrian literature and fiction, legends, elaborately designed photo and art volumes". Later, children's and young people's literature was increasingly added, which wanted to be exceptional both in terms of content and illustrations. This is why illustrators like Linda Wolfsgruber and Angelika Kaufmann prefer to publish in the provincial library .

Poets Festival

Richard Pils and his family have been the owners of Raabs an der Thaya Castle , a spur castle and border fortress near the Czech border, since 1996 . One motive for the acquisition was concern for the existence of the historical building ensemble. Together with the association Our Castle - Friends and Patrons of Raabs Castle , he has been carefully renovating the building stock of the historically grown and diverse castle complex for as many years. Pils became a castle owner against his will, as all those involved in a rescue initiative, after being awarded the foreclosure auction, saw their task as fulfilled and left the initiative. In the long term he is pursuing “the plan to establish the castle as an open cultural institute beyond the borders”.

For 20 years, from 1996 to 2016, he hosted a three-day poet festival every summer in the spacious castle castle of Raab. The Poetry Festival was made each year under a different motto, 2013 as was the motto: Literature is not a bed of roses and 2014. 25 years reports from the heart of the world . The main purpose of the Poet Festival was to present new publications and to network writers, artists and readers. “There are events, it's about talking, taking a breather and networking. Everyone can come, ”Pils once described the festival. In addition to readings with music, there were also concerts, performances, theater, film screenings and guided tours of the castle. The festivities began on Sunday with a literary morning pint in the Arkadenhof with readings with music and a buffet and ended in the afternoon with other events.

Between the poet festivals , the castle castle also served as a cultural center for exhibitions and international master classes for violin, cello, viola, clarinet and chamber music. In 2014 and 2016, artisans from the Waldviertel showed their work as it was being created. The castle castle is still open for events, castle tours are also possible outside the tour times on weekends by appointment.

Provincial café

Since 2002, Pils has had a cooperation with a book café called Café der Provinz mit Schanigarten in Vienna's Josefstadt (8th district ) . It is known for its crêpes and waffles, made from organically grown cereals. Pils is open to other coffeehouses who want to franchise another café in the province with their books.

Culture factory

A former factory of the Viennese silk and cotton weaver manufacturer Samuel Eisenberger in downtown Gmünd , where carpets were made until 1992, he acquired in 2010 together with the book printer Herbert Schlesinger. From 2011 they had the former, listed factory converted into a multi-purpose building, a regional cultural center for art projects, concerts, children's theater, but also for school events. A large collection of functional printing machines, some with lead type , are exhibited on the ground floor for viewing. The first floor became the warehouse for the provincial library publishing house .

Private life

First, he lived and worked as a publisher on a farm of Angersdorf s Großwolfgers , 1998, he moved into the former tavern and the community. In addition to the publishing and living quarters, he converted the former tavern into a reference library for his publisher's publications - and as a reading salon for visitors with a view of the Anger pond. On the property there is a book sculpture in memory of the writer Thomas Bernhard , of whom Pils published many editions. Richard Pils lived here a long time ago with his wife Helga and their five children. For a few years he has lived mainly at Raabs Castle. A distinctive feature of Pils is its Chinese braid , which his wife Helga braids for him. In his little free time he works as a beekeeper.
