In 1868, the St. Pöltner Bishop Joseph Feßler bought the St. Pöltner Bote and transformed it into the St. Pöltner Zeitung , which is the third oldest newspaper in Austria. In 1874 the "Catholic Press Association" of the diocese of St. Pölten in Krems was founded, which from 1876 published the "Press Association Messenger" and in 1889 moved to St. Pölten. During the National Socialist era, the press association's newspapers became the peasant weekly newspaper of the NSDAP .

After the Second World War , the first issue appeared on March 7, 1946. One of the young journalists at the time was Hugo Portisch .

In 1965, eleven newspapers from the Preßverein from Krems, St. Pölten, as well as from the Wald and Mostviertel regions, were merged into NÖN with a circulation of around 37,000. In 1966 the Hollabrunner Zeitung was founded as a local edition. The other districts from the Weinviertel and the industrial district followed until 1975.

After various takeovers over the decades, the newspaper has appeared as Neue NÖN in 28 regional editions since 1995 . Since September 27, 2004, NÖN has been appearing consistently in color and partly with new content. The print editions of the NÖN consist of 28 different local editions. Since 2019, the editions have been published as a uniform newspaper, which houses both the local section and the national reporting.

In addition to the NÖN sales titles, the NÖN distributes the product "NÖN-Mittendrin, a special journal to every household" 10 times a year to over 650,000 households throughout Lower Austria.

Publishing management

From 1964 to 1995, Hans Ströbitzer was editor-in-chief . The first editor-in-chief of NÖN and managing director of the NÖ-Pressehaus (short: NP) was Harald Knabl from Wiener Neustadt until the end of 2015. Martin Gebhart was editor-in-chief in 2016/17. From October 1, 2017 to the end of November 2017, Karl Ettinger was editor-in-chief of NÖN. Due to illness he had to give up the post.

The management of the editorial team of “Niederösterreichische Nachrichten” (NÖN) is now being taken over by a team of two: Walter Fahrnberger (43) is to concentrate on organizational matters and the regional newspaper, Daniel Lohninger (43) on the management, organization and support of the local editorial staff.
