The Ybbstal is a valley in the Ybbstal Alps in western Lower Austria . It runs above Hollenstein an der Ybbs in an east-west direction and below it in a south-north direction and is drained through the Ybbs to the Danube .

landscape

From Lunz am See to the confluence with the Kleine Ybbs between Opponitz and Waidhofen an der Ybbs , the valley is bordered by wooded mountains. From Lunz to Opponitz the valley has a valley floor about 200 to 500 meters wide, on which most of the meadows thrive. The valley is narrower only in a few places, for example between Göstling an der Ybbs and Kogelsbach, as well as in short passages near St. Georgen am Reith and Hollenstein . From Opponitz the valley narrows before it becomes a gorge in the Ofenloch . After this three-kilometer-long narrow point, the valley widens again a little. In the area of the mouth, the valley passes from the limestone Alps to the flysch zone , with the character of the landscape changing fundamentally. While the Ybbs itself flows deeply here, the valley is wider. The town of Waidhofen an der Ybbs is also located here. North of Kematen an der Ybbs , the Ybbstal changes its character again. From here the Ybbs flows through wide plains such as the Amstettner Heide or the Ybbsfeld. The valley can hardly be recognized as such here.

economy

Agriculture

The Ybbstal is - as part of the Mostviertel region named after it - a traditional fruit-growing region, in which mainly apples and pears are cultivated. Some of the harvested fruit (including windfalls) is processed into must by pressing at home , which is why the Ybbstal is part of the Lower Austrian Mostviertel. However, today a lot of fruit is also processed industrially into fruit juices. For example, the company Eckes-Granini  GmbH & Co. KG has a location in the Ybbstal, whose juices produced here are marketed under the name YO (Ybbstaler fruit processing) . In the Ybbstal, the rare cornel , which is known as the dirndl in Austria , also thrives . This - or its use - was included in the register of traditional foods in Austria as a protected cultural asset. But it is the flagship of the adjacent gourmet region Pielachtal , the flagship of the gourmet region Ybbstal is the Ybbstal trout because the fish plays tomboy and from pond farming, an increasingly economic and tourist significant role. Animal husbandry is also an important branch of industry in the landscape.

Industry

The most important town in the Ybbstal is Waidhofen an der Ybbs with around 11,000 inhabitants. Thanks to the hydropower of the Ybbs, the Ybbstal had long been home to the small iron industry . Therefore the valley belongs to the Eisenwurzen area . Today there are some larger industrial companies such as voestalpine plants in the communities of Sonntagberg and Kematen an der Ybbs , Bene AG in Waidhofen an der Ybbs and the Mondi paper mills in Kematen and Ulmerfeld-Hausmening .

traffic

The Ybbstal is accessible by rail via the Ybbstalbahn from Waidhofen to Lunz am See and a side branch of the Rudolfsbahn from Amstetten to Waidhofen. The operation of the Ybbstalbahn was stopped by the ÖBB on December 11, 2010. The Ybbstal opens up the B121, the Weyerer Straße from Amstetten to Waidhofen, the B31  Ybbstal Straße between Waidhofen and Göstling and the B25 Erlauftal Straße from Göstling to Lunz am See.
