history
In ancient times the area was part of the Noricum province , there was a Roman road along the Ybbs that crossed the river in Kematen. In Kematen there was a small settlement that in 1292 comprised four houses and a mill.
In 1305 the name "Chemnaten" (heated houses) was first mentioned in a document. The bridge in Chemnaten is mentioned for the first time in 1324.
During 1371–1379 the bridge was closed in the course of a regional economic dispute between Waidhofen and Steyr.
The stone bridge that still exists today is built in 1860.
On October 6, 1965, the name was changed from Kematen to Kematen an der Ybbs.
In 1966, the local council decided to rename the streets of Kematen based on the model of New York : A local council that visited this metropolis liked the systematic numbering of the streets there and won the Kematen mayor for this idea.
On January 1, 1969, the independent community Niederhausleiten an der Ybbs, split off from Kematen in 1921, was again incorporated into Kematen (now: "an der Ybbs"). The street designation is also continued here - with the prefix "Heide". The state road B121 is called Heide 1. Straße, the names run intermittently to Heide 16. Straße.
In 1976 a biological wastewater treatment plant was built in Kematen.
On February 2, 1985, Kematen was appointed market town.
From 1987 onwards, Neusiedler AG built plants to modernize the paper mill and improve the environmental situation.
