history
In ancient times, the area was part of the Noricum province and was already settled at that time.
Holnstein was first mentioned in a document in the 12th century, and the Hochstifte Freising and Passau are named as landlords. A village of Hollenstein as such only emerged in the 15th century due to the development of the iron industry. Hollenstein expanded in the 15th and 16th centuries due to the increasing iron industry to a settlement with around 20 houses. The small iron industry (hammer mills) was important for a few centuries.
The wood industry developed later. Towards the end of the Second World War, Hungarian Jews , including women, were forcibly used by the Reich Forestry Administration for road repair work, logging and other agricultural activities.
Some houses on the village square date from the end of the 18th century.
