history

In ancient times, the area was part of the Noricum province . Ennsdorf was mentioned in a document as early as 1244. The place shared the eventful history of the city of Enns, but due to the state border formed by the Enns River, it belonged to St. Valentin from the beginning of records until 1779 . It was spun off from the parish in the course of the Josephine reforms, as the inhabitants had an unreasonably long way to get to the church. It is probably due to Emperor Joseph's frugality that they refrained from building a new church. Instead, Ennsdorf and Windpassing were incorporated into the Enns parish , which had lost large areas on the Upper Austrian side. This regulation was a bit delicate, since the Ennsdorfer now had their church and also their cemetery in Upper Austria. Fortunately, with the brief exception from 1945 to 1955, the two federal states always belonged to the same suzerainty.

It was not until 1882 that St. Valentin was politically separated and the independent municipality of Ennsdorf was formed, consisting of the districts of Ennsdorf and Windpassing. At that time the place had no infrastructure. The municipal office, school and kindergarten, police station and post office were not built until the 20th century. A reunification with St. Valentin was rejected by the population, the merger with Enns was not possible due to the border. The post office was closed again in the course of the large-scale Austria-wide wave of post office closings. The police station has now been merged with the St. Valentin police station. To this day, Ennsdorf does not have a religious center, i.e. a church and cemetery.

In the last decades the community experienced a great economic boom due to the expansion of the port, which of course also has an impact on population growth and construction activity.

coat of arms

Blazon : “A divided shield, above in blue two golden eagles turned to the right , below again divided from silver to red.” These two eagles on a blue background are part of the Lower Austrian coat of arms and the colors red and white are the Upper Austrian state colors. The coat of arms is supposed to symbolize the location of the municipality on the border river Enns between Upper and Lower Austria and to be a sign of the solidarity with both countries.
