history
In ancient times the area was part of the Noricum province . At Hardeggerfeld , after aerial photographs from the 1970s and after prospecting by magnetic field measurement and ground radar in 2018, on the occasion of the plan to build a new football field, there are indications of a Roman settlement in the ground.
The name Behamberg first appears in a document around 1082. Around 1254 King Ottokar divided Upper Austria and Lower Austria; Behamberg is divided into Upper Austria. Since the Hungarian King Corvinus occupied the area in 1490, Behamberg has belonged to Lower Austria, as it was incorporated into the occupied area of Corvinus. In 1577 a schoolmaster in Behamberg is documented by naming his name.
The former Steinbach Castle fell into disrepair around 1800.
A local council was elected for the first time in 1850. In 1868, with the opening of the Rudolfsbahn, a train station in Rammingdorf went into operation. In 1880 the music association Behamberg was founded, in 1902 a Raiffeisenkasse was opened. In 1923 and 1924 the volunteer fire brigades were founded in Behamberg and Wachtberg, respectively. In 1927 Behamberg was connected to the telephone network. In 1938, after the annexation to Nazi Germany, the cadastral communities Hinterberg and Münichholz were incorporated into Steyr.
After the end of the Second World War, Behamberg was used as a base by the Soviet Army. From 1949 to 1950 the place was connected to the power grid. From 1973 to 1975 a 25 km long water pipeline network was built. A sewer network was built in 1988 and a senior citizens' home in 1994. From 2005 to 2007 the local square in Behamberg was rebuilt.
coat of arms
The coat of arms shows the double-tailed lion of the former crown land of Bohemia on a green three-mountain. As a talking coat of arms, it is supposed to make a reference to the place name. The place name Behamberg (= mountain of Bohemia) indicates a Slavic settlement of the 9th or 10th century ( Beham / Böhme = synonym for Slav), which is to be regarded as the forerunner of today's settlement. The green Dreiberg is also intended to symbolize the hilly landscape of the Alpine foothills in which the municipality is located. Blazon: In the red coat of arms with a green three-mountain in the base of the shield grows a black armored, silver, double-tailed, gold-crowned lion .
