history

In ancient times, the area was part of the Noricum province .

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1230 in the Babenberg land register . The Georgskirche was probably built in the first half of the 11th century as part of the "Averhilteburchstal" weir system. In 1529 and 1532 there were Turkish invasions. Under the influence of the nearby Seisenegg and Freidegg rulers, St. Georgen also became temporarily Protestant. In the Peasants' War of 1597 , the rebels gathered in St. Georgen. In 1679 the plague raged in St. Georgen. In 1683 the place was plundered by the Turks, in 1741 and 1809 by the Bavarians and the French. In 1850 the political community of St. Georgen am Ybbsfelde was established.

From 1915 to 1918 Hart was a prisoner of war camp for Russian, Serbian, Italian and Romanian prisoners of war. In 1839 prisoners of war found their final resting place in the camp cemetery near Matzendorf . World icon

In 1931 Krahof split off because of a dispute over the distribution of severe weather allowances. Since 1971 Krahof and St. Georgen am Ybbsfelde have once again formed a common community.

In 1976 the market survey of St. Georgen am Ybbsfelde took place.

  • Catholic parish church St. Georgen am Ybbsfelde hl. Georg: The parish church of St. Georgen am Ybbsfelde was first mentioned around 1100. The south side of the three-aisled church was added in 1381 and the north side chapel in 1419. A Lourdes statue was erected under Pastor Schmidl, who headed the parish from 1863 to 1891 and who was a great admirer of Mary, so that St. Georgen became a place of pilgrimage for many believers. Around 1900 the furnishings and fittings of the church were largely regotified. A large, neo-Gothic, richly carved winged altar is the heart of the church. At the beginning of the 1930s there was an extensive church renovation and the parish church was largely given its current appearance. In addition to the black and gold-framed organ case made in Baroque style, the glass windows in the presbytery, depicting the secrets of the glorious rosary, are particularly worth mentioning.
  • Metal statue of St. George: The metal sculpture of the local patron was designed and manufactured by the artist Odin Mohammed Rosenzweig. This was set up in the village in 2014 and has been a symbol of the market town ever since. The dragon is supposed to embody the evil of the present through the installation of pistols and automatic rifles.

Economy and Infrastructure

In 2001 there were 90 non-agricultural workplaces, agricultural and forestry holdings 122 according to the 1999 survey. The flagship is the soccer section founded in 1979, which after winning the championship in 1996 and 1997 belonged to the regional league west for eight years and now plays in the first class west of the Lower Austrian Football Association. In recent years the sports facility has been continuously expanded. A covered grandstand was inaugurated in August 1992. In 2004, the construction of a new clubhouse began, which was officially opened in the summer of 2006. Since then, they have been proud to have one of the most beautiful sports facilities in the Mostviertel. The SCU Raika St. Georgen has developed a good reputation, especially in the field of youth work, and repeatedly produces talents for the combat team, which is almost exclusively made up of homemade players. The club colors are black and white. After relegation from the regional league in 2005, a new team was put together by coach Josef Raab, which was able to achieve a good 4th place straight away. After the autumn 2006 season, the team took second place in the table. After another relegation in 2010, the club played in the 2nd class Yspertal since the 2010/11 season. Immediate resurgence was given as the goal. In the 2011/12 season, the SCU under coach Florin Calin was promoted to 1st class west.
  • In 2005, the community and the village renewal association built a leisure facility with a FunCourt and beach volleyball court.
