The locality comprises the left-side slopes and valleys of the valley of the Ybbs , halfway between Opponitz and Hollenstein. This includes a total of ten buildings with around 15 residents, these are the individual layers Döstelberg, Schmuckenhof and Garnberg - the latter belongs to the village of Thann in the municipality of Opponitz - and in particular Hohenlehen Castle with the Meierhof Waldbauernschule, today's Hohenlehen Agricultural College .

In addition to the village of Garnberg, the village of Thalbauer in the valley below the Pichlhöhe (Saurüssel) , the pass crossing to Weyer in Upper Austria, and the location of Mühlau in the village of Hohenlehen , the other locations on the right-hand side of the ybbs, also belong to the Hollensteiner cadastral community Garnberg .

history

The local area belonged to the local community Groß-Hollenstein in the late 19th century , as did Thann . Gustav Davis , later founder of the Kronen Zeitung , bought the grounds between Opponitz and Kleinhollenstein by 1906 and, after the valley was accessible with the construction of the Ybbstalbahn in 1896, formed the Hohenstein estate , at that time a forest and hunting estate covering around 1500  hectares to which also from 1913 - but only until after the First World War - the Seeburg estate to the north also belonged.

Today Thann (with the Garnberg homestead) belongs to Opponitz, the village of Garnberg (with the castle and mountain farming school) to Hollenstein.
