Göstling an der Ybbs is a market town in the Scheibbs district in Lower Austria with 2025 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020).

geography

Göstling an der Ybbs is located in the Mostviertel in Eisenwurzen in Lower Austria. The area of ​​the market town covers 143.55 square kilometers. 84.7 percent of the area is forested.

The market is on the Lower Austria. Eisenstrasse in the middle of the Göstling Alps ( Hochkar 1808  m , Dürrenstein 1878  m ) in the triangle of Lower Austria , Styria and Upper Austria and belongs to the political district of Scheibbs . Geographically, Göstling and the Göstling Alps mountain group belong to the northern Limestone Alps .

history

In ancient times, the area was part of the Noricum province .

In the Göstling massacre, which took place on the night of April 12th to 13th, 1945, 76 Jewish slave laborers (42 women, 23 men and 11 children) were murdered in Göstling . Members of the Waffen SS and HJ set the victims' camp barracks on fire using bazookas and hand grenades .

Population development

According to the results of the 2001 census , there were 2,181 inhabitants. In 1991 the market town had 2,187 inhabitants, in 1981 2,198 and in 1971 2,159 inhabitants.

Economy and Infrastructure

In the past, the place was characterized by the iron industry ( Eisenwurzen ) and agriculture . Today, besides agriculture and forestry, tourism is predominant.

In 2001 there were 99 non-agricultural workplaces, agricultural and forestry holdings 110 according to the 1999 survey. According to the 2001 census, the number of people in employment at home was 907. The 2001 activity rate was 42.54 percent. One of the employers is the Ybbstaler Solebad, which opened in December 2009 and has around 60 employees.

  • Winter tourism: Göstling is one of the most traditional holiday destinations in Lower Austria and, with the Hochkar, has the largest and most snow-sure ski area in Lower Austria. There are slopes of all levels of difficulty, from easy slopes to steep mogul slopes. The ski area has four four-seater chairlifts, a detachable four-seater chairlift, two drag lifts and a double chairlift. In addition to another, smaller ski area (Steinbach lifts), natural tobogganing, an indoor swimming pool with a sauna park, several cross-country ski trails , including the "Hochreit panorama trail " and ice rinks, complement the tourist offers in winter.
  • Summer tourism: In summer tourism, hiking up to 1880 m above sea level on managed alpine pastures, rafting , paragliding and the “ Mendlingtal ” adventure world with one of the last wooden drift systems in Europe should be emphasized.
