Herbert Mandl (born June 5, 1961 in Scheibbs ) is an Austrian ski trainer and former ski racer. After he had ended his active career as a ski racer after injuries at the age of only 19, he began to work as a trainer in the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV) during his studies , before he became head trainer of the Norwegian women's team in 1992. He returned to the ÖSV in 1998 and was the head coach of the Austrian ski ladies from 2002 to 2013.

biography

Herbert Mandl grew up in Göstling an der Ybbs in Lower Austria , attended the ski school in Lilienfeld from 1971 to 1975 and then switched to the ski school in Stams in Tyrol . During his time at the main ski school, he began regular training and regular racing. After initial successes in national and international school races, Mandl, who belonged to the Göstling-Hochkar ski club , was accepted into the junior team of the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV). In 1978 he was promoted to the B squad. In addition to good placements at the Austrian Youth Championships, Mandl achieved several victories in FIS races and podium places in the European Cup . After suffering two cruciate ligament ruptures in quick succession, he ended his career in 1980.

In 1981, Mandl began studying sports science and geography at the University of Innsbruck , which he completed in 1986 with the academic degree of Magister. He completed the trainer and ski instructor training and then worked himself as a trainer for future trainers. In 1985 he started his coaching activity in the ÖSV, first in the men's junior team and from 1987 as the women's European head coach. In 1992, Mandl moved to the Norwegian Ski Association , where he was the head coach of the women's team until 1997. During this time, the Norwegian ski women won three medals at world championships and achieved several podiums and a victory in the World Cup .

After a one-year interlude as managing director of a company in the sports sector, Mandl returned to the ÖSV in 1998 as the women's world cup coach of the Super-G and downhill group. He celebrated great successes with the Austrian “Speed ​​Women” in winter 1998/1999 with the overall, Super-G and Giant Slalom World Cup victory by Alexandra Meissnitzer , the Downhill World Cup victory by Renate Götschl as well as the triple victory in the Super-G and the quadruple triumph in the Downhill at the 1999 World Cup . From the 1999/2000 season, Mandl was the men's coach of the World Cup giant slalom / Super G group for three years, to which the two overall World Cup winners Hermann Maier and Stephan Eberharter belonged.

In 2002, he succeeded Karl Frehsner in the position of racing director or sports director for women, which he held until 2013. Under his leadership as head coach, Austria’s ski ladies won nine gold medals at world championships (including team competition) and three gold medals at Olympic Games , plus a further 25 silver and bronze medals. They won a discipline world cup fifteen times and once the overall world cup by Nicole Hosp in 2007. After the 2012/2013 season, Mandl resigned as a ladies' racing director in order to head the ski academy in St. Christoph am Arlberg from now on . Jürgen Kriechbaum was appointed as his successor .

Mandl now lives with his wife and two children in Fulpmes in Tyrol.
