In 1273 the Tyrolean Count Meinhard II founded the Cistercian Abbey of Stams . Co-principleed as the burial place for the Tyrolean sovereigns , Stams advanced to become a spiritual center of the region.
Population development
parish
Stams is a Roman Catholic parish. Parish patron is St. John the Baptist , the pastor of Stams is called Father Michael Falkner O. Cist. The construction of the parish church in Stams is based on a wooden structure that stood here around 700 AD and a stone church from the 8th century. Only after the foundation of the monastery was today's parish church built.
Connection of the parish to the Stams monastery
Stams is an independent parish , but it is “incorporated” into the well-known Cistercian monastery in Stams, that is, the pastor of Stams is a monk from the monastery. The connection between the parish and the monastery is very close. Every Sunday a parish service is celebrated in the collegiate church, especially the solemn festivals throughout the year with a pontifical mass by the abbot of the German Erd monastery .
Dispersion of the parish area
A characteristic of the parish is the dispersal of the inhabitants. The approximately 1,100 Catholics in Stams live in the center with the parish church, monastery, Don Bosco House, numerous schools and public buildings, in the settlement in the valley floor, in the hamlets of Mähmoos, Windfang, Haslach and Thannrain, up to 4 km to the east, the mountain farms in Hauland and in the 3 km remote Staudach in the west. Holy mass is celebrated once a month in the chapel of the respective district .
