Hans Knapp (mathematician)

Hans Knapp (born May 20, 1935 in Stams ; † September 6, 2004 ) was an Austrian mathematician . He was a university professor at the Johannes Kepler University in Linz and from 1987–89 also its rector .

Knapp graduated from the teacher training institute in Innsbruck and then taught for a few years as a primary school teacher in Weerberg . He then studied mathematics at the University of Innsbruck and received his doctorate in 1960 with Wolfgang Gröbner . After completing his studies, he worked at the University of Düsseldorf and at a NASA research center in Madison . This was followed by a position as head of the computer center at the University of Innsbruck.

In 1968 he was appointed to the newly founded Johannes Kepler University Linz and remained loyal to it until his retirement. Most recently he was head of the Institute for Stochastics . He was one of the founding professors of the Technical and Natural Sciences Faculty and was its dean in 1974/1975 . From 1987 to 1989 he was rector of the university.

In 1995 he retired .
